Question about Mexthotraxte

I just got switched to mexthotraxte injections since the other medication was making me sick for Crohns and AS. I just successfully did my first injection last weekend. I have to take folic acid while taking this medication.

Any input and feedback would be great from current or past users.

Thanks

My son started with oral mtx then switched to injection mtx. He takes folic acid every day.

We have really noticed a difference in his back pain when starting mtx. The rheumy has moved him to the mtx for issues he has with his wrists and fingers because mtx isn't usually very effective with back/hips-AS. But it didn't take a month before the back stiffness, pain completely subsided.

I can't really report about side effects because C has never experienced any with the oral or the injection.

He also takes humira weekly so he does his mtx on Saturday and humira on sunday.

My Specialists have talked about a TNF blocker, right now I am still on a decreasing steriod also so I am waiting to see if this will help with both when off the steriod.

My daughters both have AS and have both been on Methotrexate. They were both on MTX in combination with an anti-TNF though - not by itself. My younger daughter had a lot of side effects with MTX - nausea, dizziness, fatigue - but my older one had no trouble with it at all. It really depends on the person.

My younger daughter took Zofran for the nausea. They both took Folic Acid and that helped prevent side effects. They both did the MTX shots on the weekend so that they had some time to recover. They both did better on shots (vs. pills) but some people do better with pills.

MTX worked very well for both my girls. It was meant to help more with peripheral joints - most studies show that it does not help much with spinal/axial AS. We hoped that it would help their knees, ankles, elbows, feet etc. but both say that they think it helped their SI joints and lower back too.

Typically if MTX does not work, an anti-TNF like Remicade or Humira is used, especially when the spine and SI joints are involved.

Good luck!
