PALEO+SCD+FODMAP Combination Diet for Crohn's

Hi everyone!

I've been researching for several months about how can I get rid of my symptoms of Crohn's and I found some diets which have helped some people with the desease. These diets are the paleo diet (with the optional autoimmune protocol), the SCD, and the FODMAP diet.

I've read that a combination of these three diets would be the ideal one for IBD but I still a little bit scheptical about following such a restrictive diet.

I want to hear from you, your opinions and/or experiences following one or all the diets that I've mentioned

Thanks so much for your reponses! :ghug:
Greetings from the Canary Islands (sorry for my English)

Since Paleo AI, FODMAPS and SCD all have an elimination stage it is not much harder to do them all at the same time than just one of them.
Yes, it is ridiculously restrictive for the first month but after that the diet opens out pretty quickly.

With FODMAPS there is a month of not eating any (or very low amounts of) any FODMAP foods, and then reintroducing then systematically to see if they are tolerated. I found this podcast very useful for understanding FODMAPS [1]

With the AI protocol there is a month of not eating any foods that MIGHT irritate the gut or cause gut dysbiosis, and then reintroducing then systematically to see if they are tolerated [2]

With SCD there is an intro diet and stages of reintroduction [3]. Of all the diets this is the one I would leave out but if symptoms are severe follow the intro stages as it is the only one specifically aimed at digestive issues. Alternatively GAPS is a more modern take on SCD and may make a bit more sense[4]

Paleo ranges from 'old school' very low carb to much more relaxed 'Perfect health diet'[5] which includes 'safe starches' – starch that does not contain toxins.

Personally , I went from SCD to old school paleo to PHD, and while some carb restriction may have helped reduce harmful disbiosis, I find that I tolerate 'safe starches' very well

[3] The SCD Intro Diet
“The intro diet helps get a head start on clearing the harmful microbes out of the body by starving them while at the same time feeding the body nutritious foods that are easy to digest. “

The Stages of SCD
“-Introduce ONE new food at a time- a two to four day interval is a great (but not mandatory) guideline for introducing new foods. This will make it possible determine whether each new food can be tolerated.
-This chart is based on the healing process that is taking place.
It is not based on a timeline. Some people may be able to add new foods more quickly than others.“

I've been sticking to SCD for over two years now, and have been in remission for about as long. I started with the strict elimination diet, then added things in. I now eat a slightly modified version of SCD - I eat sweet potatoes, and rice once in a while.
It's a commitment, but my experience has been so positive, that I absolutely think it is worth it.

Hello, I am sorry for hearing the flare coming back. I think you have a remission for three years now. I want to know if you take the EEN and start the SCD diet again after ending of your vocation. Of course, We need stick the SCD for long time, especially CD, about four -five years in the BTVC book. Maybe there have better expect than before.
I need your advice and your current condition. I hope you have a remission again now!

I have stuck with SCD (slightly modified as I described above). While Flaring I return to a more simple version of SCD similar to the SCD "intro diet" you can read about at scdlifestyle.com - currently I'm eating meat cooked without oils, hard boiled eggs, vegetables boiled or steamed and pureed, gelatin made with 100% fruit juice, bananas. I have not used EEN to treat a flare. While it doesn't have the same control as EEN, eating this very simple, largely liquified diet is based in the same logic of allowing the digestive system more rest to heal. While I still have some pain and fatigue, I've been able to get most of my flare symptoms under control this way.

That sounds good! Do you have the period blood test in order to understand and detect the acitivity level of CD. How long do you have no medicines for CD and under the doctor's permission.

I am currently on mesalamine, but probably changing soon due to the flare...What medication is right is really individual though and should be discussed with your doctor
