Vitamin C supplements that don't cause diarrhea?

I pretty much can't currently consume much of anything that naturally contains Vitamin C but ascorbic acid supplements give me diarrhea.

Suggestions?

Hey, Instant Coffee, I took a couple Airborne chewable tabs the other day because I felt a little sniffly. The sniffles went away but I had terrible urgent diarrhea the rest of the day- do you think it's the Vitamin C? I hadn't connected that. Have you tried rose hips tea?

It was likely the vitamin C, but airborne also contains maltodextrin, sorbitol, mineral oil, and sucralose, all of which are potential crohn's triggers.

most teas don't sit well with me either .

Try liposomal vitamin C. It is more easily absorbed.

Dan
I will look into this.

I sometimes buy one of those SOBE type of beverages (I look at the label for one with a lot of Vitamin C)...then just take a sip every once in a while and find out how much you can tolerate at one time. With Vitamin C tablets, you can't really take a little at a time.

Great idea, SN8888! I discovered another diarrhea trigger the other day-I tried one of the new Ensure Max drinks- they have 30g of protein and only 1g of sugar. Tasted great- I had the Cafe Mocha flavor. For the next five hours, I suffered constant diarrhea before figuring out that the Ensure also had 100mg of caffeine in it! Agh! I often learn at the school of hard knocks...

If you're still looking for supplements, try the ascorbate form of vitamin c, such as with calcium or magnesium i.e. calcium ascorbate. You can get them in powdered form as well, so there's no other addatives, bulking agent etc.

Hey, thanks, NCman. I find that vitamin C helps to get rid of a cold if I catch it just at the beginning, so it's a real plus if it doesn't cause the big D.

That's because it contains Carrageenan. Make sure you avoid this additive in all products. It's a known inflammatory substance, and can make even non-IBD patients not feel great.

This is a little lifehack, that I found now that help me and make me fun. If you want completely organic vitamins that have been tested a lot and your wife is pregnant, steal it from her. I have found that these prenatal vitamins are not linked to disturbance in bowel activity and yet contain the correct dose of vitamins, iron, etc. My problem is that vitamins cause allergies, but these don't. According to the instructions, they also contain a mixture of probiotics and enzymes to support healthy digestion. The main thing is that she doesn't notice, so you have to act like a spy.

really good advice to take vitamin C from rosehip tea. It is very rich in vitamin C (but it is important to drink immediately and avoid contact of the drink with oxygen, so it is better to brew in a thermos)
you can try powdered forms or liquid forms of vitamin C from the store, it is believed that the drops are more bioavailable to the body than capsules and will cause fewer side effects compared to pills
