Prednisone for only 5 days?

Hi all. I went to ER on 24th for significant pain on right side. CT scan found narrowing at site of surgery in terminal ileum 7 years ago. ER doc prescribed 60 mg prednisone for 5 days. Pain has improved markedly. I'm thinking it may be foolish to just go off it with no other treatment in place. I have been in remission until now since surgery, or so I thought. I have appt with new GI doc in 2 weeks. Should I get general practitioner to continue prednisone until then? Thanks.

Tynemouth,
Personally I would see how you feel when finished the 5 day course.Especially if you're feeling better.60mg is quite a high dose,I've only ever taken 40mg.Most people want to be on steroids for as short a time as possible and the doctor who prescribed them for only 5 days must have thought that was adequate for your present problem. If in doubt though, ring your G.P...….

The same thing recently happened to me. Went to the ER and then admitted to the hospital for 24 hours. Hospital doctors said it was a Crohn's flare based on my symptoms and CT scan results. Upon leaving the hospital I received a 7 day prescription for Prednisone. I could not get in to see my GI for 14 days from release from the Hospital. After my Hospital prednisone treatment was completed, I called my GI office and talked to the Medical Assistant who seemed unconcerned about my 7 day prednisone prescription expiring before my GI visit. I had a second visit to the GI 21 days after leaving the Hospital. Based on my stool sample results for my calprotectin, plus my symptoms and the Hospital CT scan, I was prescribed a 20 day regimen of prednisone. [ I get a CT Enterography next week, so after that I will find out what the GI wants to do as far as my future treatment, it may be changing biologics.]

I am only 8 days into my 20 day regimen of Prednisone and I have terrible constipation [ I started taking Miralax yesterday ], a very noticeable increase in appetite and less sleep. Sleep loss really effects how I feel and my mood. I had started taking 10mg of THC [ cannabis extract chocolate candy bar ] every night and it helped me fall asleep quickly and I slept 5 hours in a row which was amazing. Marijuana just became legal in my State in the USA. I still have 12 more days to be on the prednisone !! If the Miralax doesn't work, I would have to take laxatives and laxatives are dangerous. Good Grief.

Side Note : My prednisone prescription is 40 mg for 5 days, 30 mg for 5 days, 20mg for 5 days and 10mg for 5 days. What is the normal prednisone dosage and prescription time ?
