Diarrhea for 2-3 wks

hello - my 28 yr old son (diagnosed w/ CD 2-3 yrs ago) has been on Humira about 2 yrs and has done well (blood tests every 3 months have been normal every time and recent routine chest x ray was normal) / occasionally (about 3-4 times in the 2 yrs he has been on humira he has had some mild-moderate cramps that sometimes go away w/o meds but usually he uses the antispasmodic Bentyl for a day to do the job) - anyway last 2-3 weeks each time he has a BM (about once a day) stool is loose and watery - recently frequency has increased to 3-4 BMs /day still loose and watery also w/ some gas - no apparent blood - occasionally mild cramping , mostly just prior to BM - otherwise in fine physical condition (5-11, 175 - runs 30-34min 5x/wk - energy level and appetite apparently good) /// has scope scheduled in a week (previous scopes 2.5 yrs ago did show ulcerations) //// so any guesses what the problem is?

Hi, has he been on the same Humira dose for the last two years? It could be that he needs a dose/frequency adjustment and that the Humira isn't lasting as long. He should let his GI know. It would be good to keep on top of this as you don't want it to slide into a flare. Has he had his Humira levels checked?

yes - 1 pen every 2 wks

This means that if he needs an adjustment, there's lots of room for it as he is at the lowest recommended dose at this time. Often, the dose or frequency needs to be adjusted. Definitely it should be brought to GI's attention.

thanks for the info, you have been helpful- anxious to see what next thursday's scope shows - probably some ulcerations - he and I are concerned

Sorry vincente - one parent to another parent. ;)
well my son got his scope Thursday and it was not the best - substantial inflammation w/ ulcerations especially in the cecum w/ STRICTURE - DR put him on 30mg prednisone a day and said see him in a month - he did feel great friday sat sun and mon and had BM each day ( not real solid but not the diarrhea he was having prior to prednisone) - but it is late thursday evening he is in bed and has not had a BM since Monday morning - he does feel almost as good as earlier in the week but no BM for 3+ days despite trying some Miralax, metamucil and just tonight colace and senna (see what the morning brings) - says maybe 2-3 x /day starting yesterday feels a slight sharp pain in the cecum area and also on the other side (last only seconds - no feeling when pressure applied to areas) and feels a little tight in a line under is belly button - calling Dr tomorrow morning /// again very concerned - possible blockage?

Yes call the doctor just to make sure. I wouldn't use product products like senna if there is a possible blockage. Senna is a purgative and can be too harsh on a digestive system that might be obstructed. I hope today is a better day for your son.

doc says not concerned and to take miralax 3x / day - son does feel fine except for little tightness across lower abdomen

FRI - finally had a small BM at work and a little larger one w/ the aid of an enema later //// SAT - took colace had a still larger BM (closer to normal size) - good progress and he's now eating much more - was feeling ok but feels better now (almost 100%) / thanks for all suggestions - sees Doc in 3 wks to discuss next move if any /// I guess like most all who have CD he gets ready for his life long battle ' luckily there are lots of options

everything fine now - feeling well gained back lost weight and some - normal BMs - 3 month blood is fine except for WBC of 12.9 (my brother an infectious disease pharmacist says nothing to worry about + I did read that prednisone can raise WBC) - is currently on 30 mg predmisone / day - sees Dr a week from thrursday / thanks for listening and especially the input from you that have had similar problems
