I rarely hear anything good about it and a thread was deleted maybe a year ago with someone trying to sell aloe products where some people tried it but most people got sick (increases diarrhea). Aloe works great on the skin but doesn't work the same when its ingested. There are products out there now stating that they have managed to extract the healing property ONLY from the aloe plant but I highly doubt it as they still don't have ANY clinical studies just a few people "claiming" to be cured or better which is a load of bumpkiss to me. There was also a company that was selling AMP (the healing property in aloe) that was charged with fraud because it claimed to contain a certain amount of AMP in each capsule (like over 300mg) but when tested the capsules contain less that 50mg and the rest was a soy based filler. It's a placebo drug imo.

I heard that it could cause bleeding when taken intestinally, especially for Crohn's patients. I don't have a link, but you could probably find that info online.
I seem to remember reading that it was good for IBS, but not for Crohn's.

I have only been using aloe vera juice for about a month now. I just found out after the fact that it is a natural anti-inflammatory when taken internally. When reading about other people's chains in here it seems to all say the same thing... it relieves constipation. That's what I use it for. Is that what you are wanting to use it for? Most people who have issues with it seem to already have diarrhea or loose bowels (that get worse) so talk to your doc if your kiddo has that issue already. MY ISSUE IS CROHNS. My meds give me severe constipation. I take 1-4 oz of aloe vera juice daily and it keeps me regular with no side effects and no pain or bloating. "fruit of the earth" wild berry flavor from Wal Mart.

I don't know very much about it other than if you keep drinking it --you will have to keep going--until you are empty. It is not like taking the usual laxative either. You just get the urge and need to go. You won't be able to hold it very long so don't be on the road or anything. It worked great for my 2year old healthy daughter as well!

Its hard doing searches for it, especially if I include AMP in the search because all that pops up are those sites and adds promoting it. They've flooded google and none of it has any scientific data to back up any of the claims.

I personally have tried AMP in the last few weeks with some pretty decent success, but I agree, it's hard to find good information out there with some many ads, maybe this forum needs an official non-biased review section?

If it can be found, by all means but I dunno. Should we really fill the site with all the supplements out there? Especially the ones with no scientific data? There's nothing worse for a person with a chronic illness than false hope (well maybe not nothing :p ).

*I am not a doctor at any means, however ive been to a few doctors and I was sick of them trying new medications out on me, made me feel like a guinea pig :-( However I do not believe my crohns is sever as others(my doctor would disagree) so I decided to try a more natural approach, I really feel better and my skin is softer and healthier. The brand I use is Aloe Gold by Hilltop Gardens GI formula, it is NOT cheap and the reason why i chose this brand is because my friend did research on it for many years and said it is the best grade of Aloe out there :) who knows but it works for me :)

Hi all,

http://aloereviews.com/Research/aloebook.pdf

This is where i first read the research of Dr Ivan Danhof about the four molecules that make up the mucopollysaccarides.
On the left hand side scroll down to;
Fundamental healing Properties of Aloe Vera Mucopolysaccarides.

This book is a compilation of research about all things aloe.I read it back to front before i decided to try AMP.It is not an advert by any single company.

I would love to see some trials of AMP for CD/UC sufferers so that people would have a far clearer picture of potential success before they choose whether to try it or not.

Best Wishes

I just typed 'aloe intestinal bleeding' into the Yahoo search bar and I didn't have any popups on any of the sites I checked out.

I have no idea who Dr. Standley is, but here is a quote from his site -
"DO NOT take Aloe Vera if you are pregnant or if you have any gastro-intestinal disorders. May cause allergic reactions, cramping or diarrhea. If taken internally as a purgative, it may cause a hemorrhage. DO NOT exceed recommended dosages. If taken as a laxative in excess, it could lead to irritation of the bowels or ulcers."

This site mentions the benefit for use in colitis patients -
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/607.html

I'm not saying not to take it, I'm just saying that *I* won't risk it personally. It may be great for "normal" people, but not Crohnies in my opinion.

1) awesome name

2) I freaked out a little when I read your post about Dr. Standley since I'm taking AMP (aloe-derived tablets) from AloeElite. I called them up to ask them about allergic reactions and whether its true that it can cause even worse symptoms. They told me that it's true, that Aloe Vera itself can actually cause some nasty cramping and worsen conditions in some patients. However, that the Aloe...mucilaginous polysaccharides that's in the pills designed for IBP is actually the extract of the plant that helps, with all the irritants removed. So I guess pure Aloe does help but it hurts at the same time, and what these guys do is take out the bad stuff, pretty interesting. They said they've never had a patient complain about allergic reactions. Hope thats true!

I tried Aloe Vera over a decade ago, couple of years on from right side hemi, when i was down to 5mg of steroids.I purchased Aloe Vera juice from my local health store. It gave me gut ache, cramps & made the 'D' even worse.
I thought it was all a myth.Back then i had no internet to read up on anything
like this so i didn't understand that it probably contained Aloin.
Type that into google & you can understand why it was a bad move for a CD patient. It is a laxative.
Thankfully all these years on i read about the mucopolysaccarides.
Not 'bumpkiss' - just what happened to me.
Glad you're doing well soiledshorts

Best Wishes

symptoms are different

I guess it all depends on your symptoms which you are treating for which treatment will work best for you. My doc says I have Crohns/UC/irr-bowel... I think I am more reacting to the drugs than anything else. My first symptom was contipation from pain meds from an unrelated surgery.

I think that is what caused all this--- then it turned into a spiral of massive bowel incontinence and diarhea. Then came the dx. Then the meds. Then the constipation that caused the cramping and then diarhea again. I have only used the ALOE VERA JUICE for about a month now, but the pain is gone, I can change the dose as needed and no incontinence post-BM anymore. I haven't hit any cycling yet so my hopes are still high that the aloe is helping. I do think there was severe inflamation in there that the doc could not see or recognise because I have not felt this good since BEFORE I had that stupid surgery that got me sick in the first place.

I haven't had to drink so much liquid fiber drink that I'm throwing up or gagging. (I'm 93lbs now.. can I really be expected to drink or chug 8-10oz of nasty fluid above and beyond my meals and drugs and all 2X day?) Don't do that anymore.

I'm trying to treat the constant pain I feel from the bottom of my stomach to the final outcome :ylol: and the bloating and gas and swelling and constipation. The loud irritating gurgling. My food leaves my stomach and finds somewhere in there and parks it. It just doesn't move, or some things (can't figure out what yet) don't digest thoroughly and get stuck. Little tiny stones. The juice has kept things moving comfortably for now, so I'm gonna keep treating until it doesn't work anymore. I haven't had the incontinence that others with the Crohns seem to have(or diarhea) as the most major thing. That is activity induced for me, not really diet now that I'm on meds.
I would not suggest taking something that is commonly known as a natural laxative if you already have loose bowels. BUT IF YOU COULD USE LOOSER BOWELS---you might try this in small doses 2X a day until you have a BM and then adjust your dose accordingly from there.
