Supplements?

Hey everyone,

Sorry I post so many questions, but am new to having Crohns still. Does anyone here take vitamins and do they bother you. I was thinking of taking Glutamine, multi, fish oil, and amino acid? Does any of this bother you?

I want to start working out more now that I think I have turned the corner, thank you Remicade, and would consider taking Creatine because red meat seems to be the only thing that gives me trouble. I was used to taking supplements and working out a lot pre-flare, but have worried about eating in general the last month non the less taking supplements.

Thanks. :thumright:

I went to an osteopath who highly recommended copious amounts of glutamine for crohns (up to 9 grams). I haven't tried taking more than a gram at a time, with no problems. It was recommended to possibly build up to that amount and take it on an empty stomach to ensure uptake.

I always take 4 grams of enteric coated fish oil throughout the day. My fish oil has 850 mg of actual Omega 3s (more EPA than DHA) per cap. I've never had a problem, though I recommend taking it with food as occasionally --though it is coated--I can still burp and taste it. I personally think enteric coated fish oil delivers the omegas where it is needed, and I visibly notice these are more effective than liquid fish oil, for digestion.

As for aminos, I can't say I've tried any. I did buy a soy based one and put it on food a couple times, but I now avoid soy products for possible GMO/phytoestrogenic/roundup laden reasons.

I've take unflavored whey 1-2 times daily with no problems. I've tried pea based protein and rice based proteins with no problems as well. On the topic of supplements, I also NEED to take (and HIGHLY recommend) multiple probios throughout the day (a multi, a L. Plantarus, a S. Boulardii).

For working out, it's probably a good idea to take whey (muscle building, taken immediately after workouts), glutamine (muscle/organ repair) and d-ribose(for energy). I'm still too lazy to stick to any workout routine, though I can use a gym for free.

Is there any research to suggest the enteric coated fish oil pills are more effective because they release in the gut? I know its to avoid the fish burp but does it help the intestines?

What brand of fish oil do you guys take? I have a bottle of Nature Made that is taking me forever to finish because the capsules are HUGE and I have so much trouble getting them down, so half the time I don't even bother.

NOGUTSNOGLORY: I haven't looked or found any studies. Personally I notice a difference in appearance of stools and I generally have less intestinal symptoms when taking an enteric coated oil versus non-coated.

I know some people say, "as long as its in your blood stream, it does its job," but I disagree because I, in my personal experience, KNOW otherwise. This may be because of the nature of my crohn's disease (resection at terminal ileum, and a handful of patches in colon).

There also may be a difference when it comes to quality, though. Barleans liquid fish oil and Spectrum caps are okay but still nowhere as effective as the Source Naturals Ultra Potency enteric coated stuff I take now (4 gram sized pills a day). I've found if I go off of fish oil for more than 2 days, I become way more susceptible to foods that would normally not bother me--same goes for if I take an inferior product, I may as well take nothing.

I wanted to buy enteric coated but the selection wasn't great and I want it from a trusted company that has pure and wild fish.

I currently take Nordic Naturals.

I take around 3000mgs of EPA/DHA from fish oil a day now. It seems to help. I also take 6000ius of D3 in order to reach a testing level between 60 to 70ng/ml. That I believe helped me considerably.

I remember taking some amino acid/ protein powders in the past, and thought it upset my stomach a bit. I'm guessing it was probably the milk in it that made me feel cruddy.

3000mg sounds really high. Who told you that's ok? I take close to 1,000 through pills, oils and eating fish.

I learned about taking that amount of fish oil from this cardiologist's web sight. Typically people take around 2000mgs of EPA/DHA a day, but many take higher amounts depending on test results. My triglycerides were higher than I wanted so I upped my fish oil amount.

And the fish oil seems to help the grumpy gut a little.

Ok you sold me on it. I bought the Renew Life enteric coated pills.

My grocery store carries a couple of the Renew Life oils, and the one I'll take occasionally is the purple-boxed First Omega. I'm a big fan of that one. Those caps aren't so big either. That one's pretty potent and cost-effective--considering the limited selection my grocery carried. I would take at least 3-4 a day, but to each his own. I probably would buy that one again if I could get it discounted better than the brand I'm taking now.

I'm taking the first omega too but it's not nearly as potent as the others. I am going to buy another. Have to look at the site and assess.

I just that Whole Foods brand. I trust there supplements. I'm feeling better and starting to workout. Now that my flare is under control I seem to be able to eat anything, even milk with dinner. So I am going to try to get back to Whey Powder and some supplements.
