Azathioprine For The Long Term?

Hello all!
I was just wondering how long people have been on Azathioprine and if it's made a difference in their disease. I have been on it for 9 months and so far so good. I guess Im looking for some success stories. So often I read about people having to jump around with medications. I know its often inevitable but I really hope to stay on Azathioprine for a while and maintain how good I feel right now. I appreciate any input:ybiggrin:

Hey Niki,

Sarah has been on Imuran since her surgery 5 1/2 years ago and remains in remission. Matt has been on it since his surgery last April and is also in remission.

Good luck! I hope it continues to be successful for you!

Been on it since 1991 - it has helped with the Salofalk for a maintenance med. Maybe wearing off now though as the flares seem to be more frequent. First flare was in 1996 then more frequent since 2009.

My dog has hands!
I have been on it since 2000. I have had one mild flare. I am quite happy with it.

NikiB - again it's one of those things. Everyone's Crohn's/IBD/UC is unique to them, and some tolerate a particular drug or combination better than others. I've been on 6-MP for approx 7 months now (75mg daily), with fairly minimal side-effects. I just get very tired at times - oh, I got very sunburnt at one point! You should definitely remember to either stay out of the sun, or wear a high SPF suncream. I have a little network offs Crohnies here in Sussex and some of them have been on 6-MP very successfully for years. Hope it works out for you!

the maximum dose is 2-2.5 mg / kg / day
but need regular monitor of blood count and liver function.
it take from 6 to 10 weeks to see the effect .
i am on it since 3 months and doing fine.
be aware that the severity of the disease is different from person to person .

I have been in remission and on only Aza for 14 years now for Crohn's colitis. I've had rectal fistulas, etc, you name it.

Well, I had squamous cell skin cancer and actinic keratosis treated recently and my GI doc has now thought it best to discontinue the Aza just this past Monday after these 14 years. Part of me was relieved to be off it because of the cancer, but now I'm worried about the unknown and am concerned about stopping it and causing a flare. Always called it the double-edged sword. I'm hoping my remission was not only from Aza but on my bodies own accord.

The skin cancer risk concerns me too. I had a melanoma removed 4 years ago.
