New Job concerns

Hey Guys!!

I looked to see if I could find the threads on this and either I am imagining that I found them before or I just can't use the search engine properly :(

I have been called to notify me I am on the short list of candidates for a new posistion with a different company. When should I bring up the Crohn's? I am pretty sure my references will mention it as I have been off on medical leave for a year. I am cleared to start back to work on Monday and am currently in remission.

How do I get the Remicade covered during the change over?

I am in Canada, if that helps and would really like to hear some examples form all over about how people dealt with this circumstance.

Thanks everyone!!

Kelley, let us know how you fare and what you decide to do! I am in a somewhat similar situation, in that I have interviewed for a new position and I think it's looking good, but I haven't brought up Crohn's yet. This makes me somewhat nervous for a whole bunch of reasons, as you can probably imagine, but I don't think I'm going to mention it unless I'm asked about it directly. I'm fortunate in that my case is mild and the amount of work I've missed is minimal, but if I get the job, I'm probably not going to say anything about it (not for a while, anyways).

Anyways, it's a tricky thing to navigate. I've talked with my family and friends about this, and actually my mom put it best: "You wouldn't announce it if you had diabetes, right?" I thought she had a point. Illnesses of all types, whether mild or serious, can affect anyone at nearly any time!

Curious to see what other people think about this situation, and what they've done when navigating the job market. I consider myself fortunate that I work in an environment where my boss and co-workers know about my Crohn's, and are sympathetic and supportive. That will be tough to give up.

Hi,

In my opinion,
I really do not believe that an employer needs to know if you have an illness or not. It should not be the reason you do or do not get a job, or your ability to complete your job description. When, or if you fall out of remission, then that may be a more appropriate time to disclose your health situation/concerns re: job duties.
On the other hand, some employers do request an emergency form to be filled out by you in case of emergency. What meds your on, any illnesses, emerg. contacts. Which of course you can choose to disclose your disease or not.
I guess it comes down to what you feel comfortable with.

Take care

This exactly! As long as your intent is not to get a job so you can go on disability then your life is not ruled by this disease you should not have to warn people like you are an infected person. Good luck I hope it goes well!

Congratulations Kelley on being short listed, it is such a great feeling! I am in your area (geographical) and very familiar with this issue. I can only say what the others are saying, your illness is none of their business.

I agree with Natalie38 your illness should not determine if you get the position, your qualifications should!! However, I can tell you that my illness did effect potential employers decisions. To combat this I have asked references that I am comfortable with to speak about my abilities, not my disability and figured out a job willing to discriminate against me due to my illness does not hold the same values that I do.

Good luck Kelley!! If you are ever in need of employment resources let me know. I have an excellent array of resources in this area. Also talk to Alberta Blue Cross, they may be able to cover the drug during the change over. I was quoted about $80 a month for prescription coverage, however, the rates can fluctuation with earnings and be less than that.
