Tomorrow it is! :o

Im getting my ileostomy tomorrow.

Im both scared and excited. Can't wait to get back to a "normal" life with no damn pain and bloody diarrhea.
Im scared though that the operation wont go as planned and something goes wrong.

Any advice?

Greetings from Denmark :)

That's a normal fear. Try to focus on the positives, as it will help with your recovery.

Good luck! Let us know how you and your new buddy get along. :)

Thank you Vegan.

Im really trying. But the fear in me is strong today. Probably because its getting so close now. I am focusing on the positives indeed. Cant wait to get better. :)

Im thinking of naming it "Dut" . Like in a Dot. Dulli and the Dut :D

Welcome to the forum, Dulli, and welcome to the cool kids club (us ostomates are the coolest around!!)! It's very normal to have your fears--we've all had them--and feel free to ask any questions. I love my ileostomy. :)

Thanks :D
Surgery went fine. I'm a little tired, but no serious pain and no puke. Can't wait to get better though.

Do you guys prevent eating some kind of foods?

Great news!

Regarding diet, there is usually an "ileostomy diet" to follow, which excludes high-fiber foods, raw fruits and vegetables, raw nuts/seeds, etc. as your doctor or hospital dietitian to give you a list.

I'm happy to hear surgery went well. Speedy recovery to you! The nurses or nutritionist will advise on a low fiber diet for a few weeks and slowly integrating new foods after 4 weeks or so. Some foods should always be avoided like nuts, seeds, popcorn, mushrooms, coconut and corn but everyone is different n

Arh thanks a lot.
I have heard about sodium but not potassium.

Awesome, if just I can eat it sometime in the future, I'm glad ;)

I eat everything and have never had a problem. But, everyone is different. Good luck with your recovery...take it easy!

Not necessarily. I very slowly incorporated all of these things back into my diet and have had no issues.
The only thing that has caused an obstruction for me was bamboo shoots.

Mushrooms don't want to break down, no matter how much you chew them, so be very very careful the first few times you try them. I would put those last on your list of foods to try as you gradually expand your diet with your brand new stoma. Raw mushrooms, in particular, swell up in the GI tract and that is what can potentially cause an obstruction.

I now eat them both ways--raw and cooked. Just go slowly.

Glad you made it!

I have been an ostomate for 11ish years and have consumed unholy amounts of popcorn and nuts and seeds with no problem. IMO go easy on yourself for a while after surgery, but eventually there is no reason you can't try any food if you start out eating a small amount, chew thoroughly, and drink fluids with it. You may find that you are able to consume movie theater jumbo popcorns without incident like me :)

Mushrooms have a shell structure that is based on chitin (which is similar to keratin - hair & nails) as opposed to cellulose, this is the exact same thing that the shells of shellfish and beaks of squids are made from as such will not break down in your GI tract.

I've found after I was done healing and everything was in working order, there was very little I needed to stay away from, it wasn't until I developed a hernia that I started to have issues.

Oh damn, I hope i can avoid hernia.
My output is pretty thick, which the nurses say is a good thing, so I will get all the nutrition from the food. My output doesnt really smell either, which im happy about. Right now, i dont have any carbon filter, so she said I might be one of the lucky ones.
Also a roommate here, said that I should avoid sausage with skin on, as it would block the system.

Also feeling better today :) Can't wait to walk a little :)

That's great that your output is thick! We rejoice over funny things but that's a good sign. Things will likely change rapidly so just take it easy and don't be alarmed as you get accustomed to your new friend.

Just be careful and and you'll be fine. I got my hernia because of pride and wouldn't let people do things for me. I was determined to get back to my life as soon as possible, and wasn't paying attention to things like how heavy the bag of groceries was.

What actually happens the moment you get a hernia? Was there pain or was it something that developed over a period of time?

There was no pain when it actually happened. I've a couple, there was one above the belly button that most likely occurred early on while I was still healing, for the longest time it would hurt whenever I coughed.
The parastomal hernia which is the one that is causing my all of the issues just developed, but it probably started during my recovery period, I was in pain anyway so it was most likely masked by that. I found out about them the first time I went to the hospital for an obstruction, which was abut a year or so after my disembowelling. I had always been bulgey round the stoma, I assumed it was because I am a fat guy, and that was how it was supposed to look.

Awww man, I thought things went so well. But yesterday my ileostomy stopped working. Almost no output, and I can't pass the gas from my stomach. I'm in so much pain right now :(

I'm still at the hospital, so they're watching me. It's not like I don't have any output at all. Just very little.
