Passing staples

Among the weirdest things I've ever asked. Has anyone else passed staples post surgery? They are quite tiny and look like the letter B. I didn't even know (until today) that my innards were put back together with staples!!

You mean passed as in excreted them? From what I understand staples either need to be removed post-op or they dissolve naturally. They certainly shouldn't move and come out your bottom. That would be very disturbing and dangerous. Hope I understand the question.

Toronto,
I passed one shortly after surgery, I had a fair amount of mucus from my newly constructed J-pouch post surgery. I'm waiting for a date for my post surgery follow-up appointment, I plan on asking about it.

When you have a resection done they either sew or staple the healthy ends of the bowel together. So these aren’t incisional staples.

I would imagine a couple of staples wouldn’t be a problem but if you are talking about a few or more then I think you need to contact the surgeon, just to be on the safe side.

Yikes. I assumed the external staples. I have had resections but never found out how they reconnected but never dawned on me it would be anything but sewed.

Thanks! You'd think they would mention that ;). I've had a few. I think I'm going to call the surgeon to be on the safe side.

The staplers they use are really cool, especially for an end-to-end anastomosis after resection. Passing a few staples is normal.
