Heat intolerance

Does anyone else suffer from heat intolerance? Currently, we are going through one of the worst heat waves in history and I feel absolutely miserable when I go outside for even 5 minutes. It's not just outside, though. I have to have a fan going at all times or I feel like I might suffocate. The worst is when I'm at work in my small office (I have an administrative support position) and, even with the door open, it can be an oven in there due to the renovation. I have a small fan that I usually have to point right at my face. Is this a common symptom of IBD? I've never been so uncomfortable in the heat before.

Have you had your thyroid checked? I have hypothyroidism. It causes me to get cold easily. There is also hyperthyroidism . One of the symptoms is heat intolerance.

I have normal thyroid levels as of April when I saw my new GP. I take thyroid medication every day.

I usually have cold intolerance. I have noticed as I get older I have a intolerance to any temperature swings outside of a comfy 68-78 deg at least more so than I used to. When I flare and I get the temperature/fever spikes then I definitely am intolerant to heat. Thermoregulation does require quite of bit of energy expenditure. I would assume that with illness and inflammation our bodies ability to thermoregulate might be more taxed than a healthy individual.

My favorite temperature is around high 60s and low 70s. Lately, however, it's been in the 100s range. If I'm outside for more than 5 minutes, I feel absolutely miserable. I have a non-alcoholic fatty liver and I read somewhere that, if your liver is diseased, it can sometimes affect temperature regulation in the body. My GI doctor didn't think the NAFLD was anything to seriously worry about, but it makes me wonder what caused it. I thought it was interesting when I read that IBD can actually lead to NAFLD due to fat malabsorption.

I wouldn't say that I have a heat intolerance, but heat can definitely affect my symptoms and how I'm feeling. High heat and humidity can send my guts into some pretty wicked cramps (weirdly though, putting a heating pad on my lower abdomen can make things feel better, I don't really get why that is). As long as I stay in the air conditioning for the most part, and make sure to stay really well hydrated on the brief times that I do go outside in hot weather, then I'm usually okay. I feel for you, though, we're supposed to have a bad heat wave here in the next couple days, they're saying it could be as hot as 110 F with the heat index factored in. Ugh! I will definitely be staying indoors in the air conditioning!

I have UC and had pancolitis (all 6 ft of colon inflamed and terminal ileum). This was 6 months ago.

I have had dehydration and dizziness at times since then and cannot tolerate the heat or exertion the same as before this happened.

Definitely.

Have you told a doctor about these symptoms?

It turns out the heat intolerance was related to my hormone imbalance caused by my ovarian cyst. Once the cyst was removed, everything went back to normal. :)
