How long does Pentasa takes to work?

I've been taking pentasa for a week now. Started with two 500mg twice a day but I was still experiencing pain on the lower right side. My doc said I can increased the dosage to 3 times a day. I feel like I'm still experiencing mild pain. Wonder how long does this medication takes to kick in?

Pentasa is not recommended as a monotherapy for Crohns
Pentasa only affect the top layer of the intestine
Crohns affects all layers of the intestine not just the top layer

If pentasa is going to work you will know after 30 days

Other GI meds tend to take longer
Immunosuppressants
6-mp/aza take 3-4 months
Mtx takes 8 weeks

Biologics
Remicade takes 6-8 weeks
Humira takes 3-5 months
Entivyio takes 14-22 weeks

Good luck

I am not sure exactly where pentasa dissolve. For the best answer, you can call your pharmacist or IBD nurse.
Some CD patients with mild disease keep well on mesalamine (molecule found in Pentasa) for years, I have read several testimonies here on the forum. If your disease is mild, you have a chance, remain positive:) Give it some time, at least a couple of weeks and if symptoms persist, call your GI. If symptoms increase, call right away.
Still i would call the Dr or nurse to know when to start the 3 x a day regimen. Its best to create a relationship with your medical team so that they know what is going on for you. Wishing you well.

I've been on Pentasa for 9 years now. My issue is in the small intestines. I've somewhat figured what foods I need to stay away from. When I have issues it comes with severe abdominal pain, sometimes with vomiting, but not always. Pentasa has been the only medication, except taking prednisone a couple of times. I take 4 Pentasa capsules twice a day. Best wishes.
