Iron and fatigue

As many others I have chronical low iron levels which cause obviously tiredness and discomfort etc...
I tried some pills but it either dont work much or is bothering my bowel.

Apart from injection of iron did someone find some solution to absorb it?

Also any idea why we suffer from a lack of absorption while our disease are often in the ileum and not in the duodenum where iron is known to be absorbed? Is it wrong that iron is absorbed by duodenum or does inflammation or bleeding may lead to a leak of iron or something like that?

I have active disease in both my duodenum and TI and I was also badly anaemic when diagnosed. However after about 5 months of taking prescribed supplements this had improved significantly, and my iron levels have remained good despite the ongoing activity.

I know it makes no sense, but I do just think it's such a complicated disease that everyone is completely different, even if it defies all logic!

I use a regular iron supplement (not coated or delayed release) taken along with 500 - 1000 mg of vitamin C (which supposedly increases absorption). Twice a day on an empty stomach.

And have you ever been anemic before that and did it solve it?

Yes, I was severely anemic before that - so severe that it took an emergency transfusion of 3 units of whole blood to get my hemoglobin in the normal range. Since then the iron + vitamin C has managed to "hold the line" so to speak. It keeps me from getting anemic as measured by normal hemoglobin levels, but my iron stores and ferritin levels are still chronically on the low side.
