Hydrogen Breath Test

Hi All
It has been three weeks now since I had the breath test & it was positive.
I have e-mailed the the PA of my consultant to find out what happens now?
First it was we have not got the paper work back from the hospital.
Now it is sorting out medication, I have researched the SIBO on line and it says I should be on antibiotics and maybe a change of diet to try to get the bacteria under control in my small intestine, my symptoms are bloating, nausea
and pain I am getting very fed up at the moment.

I don't know how things typically occur in the UK since I'm in the USA, but I was tested with the same method and mine came back negative. The doctor and I discussed, before my test, that I would be put on an antibiotic to lower the amount of bacteria in my intestines. I was just recently put on Xifaxan for suspected SIBO this year (turned out, it didn't help) but I was just prescribed it again for diverticulitis. It is one of the newest antibiotics specifically used to treat SIBO in the USA. The generic name is rifaximin.

The article I'm attaching states it's important to adhere to a low carb diet while on the antibiotics because high carbs - especially sugar - can cause further bacterial growth to occur, especially yeast. I would keep calling your doctor's office to get an answer. Maybe you could go to the store and get some probiotics to take in the meantime to balance out the good bacteria with the bad. Hope you get answers soon!

Hi Missleopard 83
Thank you for the link I have had a look at it, the symptoms they describe are me to a T.
I also have asthma & Hiatus Hernia.
Since my vent yesterday I have had word that I will receive my meds Thursday they are being delivered as I live ten miles from the hospital that treats me, I still do not know what they are it will be interesting as I have reacted to all meds I have tried so far with the Crohn's.
I will let you know how I get on

Hi missleopard83
Thank you for your support it is much appreciated.
The meds came Thursday they are the same as what you took RIFAXMIN take two a day for two weeks.
I read the leaflet that came with it some of the side effects sound horrendous, no one has asked me to change my diet but I will try to do what was suggested.
I am starting them on Monday and hope everything is ok.

You're welcome! I'm on Xifaxan, too, 3 times a day for diverticulitis. Hope it helps you. The only side effect I got the first time was diarrhea, but it was minor and didn't happen every day. I quickly learned that taking it with food was important even though it says you can take it with or without food. :)
