My son has been a patient of Dr. Heyman's for six years, since shortly after my son was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

Dr. Heyman is quiet, calm, friendly, warm, caring and authentic with kids and with parents. As my son has grown into a teen, Dr. Heyman has smoothly adapted to my son's growing desire to have a voice in his own medical care.

Dr. Heyman includes parents as part of the treatment team to the extent parents are comfortable with that role. He is honest and will tell you when he doesn't know the answer to something or isn't sure how things are going to turn out.

He is always up to date on the latest research and clinical findings - often because those findings are coming from the post-docs under his guidance.

Dr. Heyman answers his own phone. He replies to his e-mails - it may only be one or two words from his iphone but he never fails to reply! If it's an emergency he or his NP work you in somehow with someone. And they work well with our local pediatrician since we live about 100 miles away.

As you can tell, we love Dr. Heyman and can't say enough good things about him.

And he has terrific doctors and nurse practitioners working with him too. Laura Cook and Betsy and all the other folks there are fabulous.

We recently moved to the Bay area and Dr. Heyman was suggested to us by our old GI. Unfortunately we did not have a good experience.

First, in order to take us as patients, they required full records including slides so they could do their own analysis. Our old GI didn't agree and said he only need report but they insisted. I have two daughters with Crohns and numerous scopes so there were 5 sets of slides sent at a cost of $260 per set for review. They reviewed one too many and my insurance refuses to pay and says I am not responsible but the hospital still makes collection calls despite the fact I have sent them all the insurance correspondence.

I could get over bad housekeeping for a good doctor. However, Dr. Heyman was very disinterested when he met us. He was rude, rushed and arrogant. One of my daughters was in a flare but he brushed us off with an IBS overlay to her Crohns. This despite the fact she had a fecal calprotectin of over 1000. She was on Remicade monotherapy and he said IF he did anything it would be to add Imuran. I told him our old doctor stopped using Imuran years ago because of the risks and he said he uses it with all his patients including teenage boys. He sent my daughter to college with probiotics for IBS and a month later she was in a full on flare, bleeding and on steroids.

He was o.k. for my younger daughter who had mild Crohns but is also on Remicade.

After your initial consult you see the nurse practitioner, who by the way is lovely. If you are on infusions, you meet her for 10 minutes at infusion. No follow up with Dr. Heyman unless there is a problem.

Our insurance company would not approve infusions at UCSF because of the cost and asked us to have home infusions.

After our first visit and first infusion we left the practice.
