How do you avoid the hunger bites?

As the title says, I tried being on a liquid diet, and I couldn't hold it for more than one day as I started feeling super hungry the next day and just drinking all the time never made me feel satisfied. Am I missing something? Or I just have to adapt to this?
 
There I'd a section in this forum called Diet, Fitness and Supplements. They would probably have some great advice over there.. Hope the best for you.
 
Also, some are allowed to crunch ice to simulate chewing to help and also some are allowed a stick of gum or candies.

Let me tag Tesscorm and my little penguin as they have some good tips.

All liquids or formula /nutritional supplements ?
There is a big difference
If your only drinking broth and juice etc you will be extremely hungry since you will have a hard time getting enough calories
All formula is different you just may need more formula
Eating crushed ice with sprinkle of sugar helps
Chewing sugar free gum( one stick )
Using lollipops of different flavors
Making cotton candy from pure sugar or lollipops

I was going to ask the same re juice/broth vs. nutritional shakes. While you may still have some hunger with the nutritional shakes, they are designed to provide you with all the necessary nutrition, assuming you are taking in the correct amount of calories.

When my son did EN (enteral nutrition - formula/liquid only), he was taking in 3000 cal/day. As he ingested his formula overnight (through ng tube), he did have some hunger towards dinner time.

In addition to the formula, he was allowed clear fluids - pop, clear apple juice (ie no fibre), gatorade, popsicles, freezies, jello, broth, gummy candies, clear hard candies (ie lifesavers), gum, etc. To try to maintain a quasi diet, he took broth to school for lunch and we arranged with his school to keep a supply of freezies for him. In the evening, it was the same - broth and a freezie. We mixed up the broth - chicken, beef, veg, fish. I also changed the flavour of the broth slightly with spices (ie heat up the beef broth with some rosemary, and then strain!). I also varied the broth between bowl with spoon and a mug (just added a bit of 'mental' variety ;)).

You do need to be careful of the sugar - ie eating a box of freezies and a few bags of gummy candies wouldn't be a good idea! :eek: But, I know that most people get sick of the 'sweet' anyway and the broth can help offset this.

But, a liquid diet should always be done under the supervision of your GI and, usually, a nutritionist.

A proper liquid diet can provide all the necessary nutrition while providing bowel rest. It is usually done for a period of 6-8 weeks. I'm not sure of the stats with adults but, with kids, it can be as successful as steroids at inducing remission. Success rates are highest when used for the first time.

While it hasn't been necessary, I have also sent my son enough formula to last him a few days when he travels. If he's not feeling well, it would give him an alternative until he can return home. As I said, it would provide him with nutrition while being easily absorbed (less work for the bowels). BUT, we would immediately see his GI and work with him before continuing indefinitely.
 
I have found that lying on my stomach can help. I was on a liquid diet before as you are now and that seemed to be a great way to diminish the hunger pains for a little while. While you are laying on your stomach you will experience hunger pains and then they will go away, at least they did for me. I hope you can find something that works for you!

It sounds like it was a very bad idea to start this without letting my GI know about it. I couldn't last more than 1 day again, and I even tried all the tips you guys wrote, but nothing worked. :/

I was just trying to speed the healing up by being on a liquid only diet, but from what you said I'd better keep my GI informed about it.

So I did my own 'unsupervised' liquid diet for four weeks, until I could see my specialist and get the proper stuff. It was purely for pain-based reasons, where (TMI) I would have a screaming fit/panic attack after going the loo. This route is not sustainable. I lived off sugary milkshakes, iced coffees, apple juice and herbal tea. It is not good for you. My mum joined me in sympathy (Crohns but remission) and lasted two days.

The proper drinks, elemental or polymeric, are much better and easier to live off. They are nutritionally balanced and contain sufficient protein and fat to keep you going. You will still crave normal food with these drinks, and if you want to achieve remission on them it requires a lot of will power. You also have to get used to the disgusting taste in your mouth.

If you still want to do it, you need the doctor and nutritionist's go-ahead. I can give you some tips to stave off hunger etc. on the proper drinks, but it will be hard.

I was on liquids for a total of 9 weeks, eating a little food alongside drinks now.

Mix it up.

Filtered water, caffeine-free herbal teas, chicken bone broth or beef bone broth, clear soups, vegetable juicing and more water.

Avoid sweets, processed drinks and processed sugar. Otherwise the whole thing is pointless.

If course if you take solid food away; then you can have feelings of hunger.

If that occurs, just rest, distract yourself or drink more fluids.

The hunger pangs normally completely disappear by day 3 or 5.

Once things have settled, stop mixing and start juicing.

Why does one choose to go on a liquid diet?
If in pain, or flaring, or you have bad diarrhea.

Sometimes good to just give your bowel a rest anyway.

I fast on veggie juice one day a week.
