6mp (mercaptopurine) ?

Hello everyone,

I am curious if any of you have been prescribed 6mp (mercaptopurine) ? If so, was it effective? I'm asking because humira alone is not working for me. I have read different posts on different support groups and such, where people have had relief of symptoms and an improvement with 6mp added. Should I mention it to my doctor? I'm thinking about calling him today, speaking with the nurse who then tells him everything. Would it be a good idea to mention this medication? I have been on asacol since I was first diagnosed. It has never helped me. My doctor has known this, yet still prescribes it to me. I take it, however I have never seen any kind of positive effect from it. Thank you for any replies. Hi. I have 2 daughters with Crohn's and they are both on 6MP. Julia has been in remission for 8 years on just 6MP. Renee uses 6MP with a Biologic(Remicade) and she is doing well. The best advice I can give you if you live in Columbus is to go see Dr. David Wenzke at Ohio Gastro.

I've been on 10 mg/kg of Remicade and 75 mg of 6 MP together for a while now, and the combination has been working really well for me!

Aww, I'm so glad to hear that! :) I'm on 80mg of humira(bi-weekly). I really want to start 6mp. I've heard more good than bad about it. Humira alone isn't working for me. /: I'm hoping my doctor puts me on 6mp. I'll find out tomorrow:)

From what I understand, 6MP is now commonly used in conjunction with a biologic (Humira, Remicade, Entivio, Etc...) to help prevent generation of antibodies to that biologic. A little surprised that 6MP was not prescribed with your Humira to begin with. If it been 2-3 months and you are not seeing results with Humira you may need to discuss new colonoscopy and switch to Remicade and 6MP. See my doctor referral in previous post.

I've been on humira just over a year now. I was originally on the normal dosage of 40mg bi-weekly. But after awhile that kinda lost its effectiveness. Especially after I was taken off of it for a week, due to problems with insurance. ): So after that it didn't work as well, my doctor then put me on the double dose of it. And I've been on that for a few months now. He was wanting to put me on remicade or entivio, but my insurance wouldn't cover it.. He had to argue with them for awhile to even get them to cover the double dosage of humira. Idk. I guess I'll figure out tomorrow.
