7 years of remission and its back

Hi all,

I'm a new member and have been having quite a bit of trouble lately. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 1999 when I was in the 9th grade. Went through prednisone and after about a year was taking sulfasalazine with limited flares. After a while, I had hardly any symptoms and lived fairly normal for a few years.

I moved and changed specialists and after tests, colonoscopies, and a few other procedures he concluded that I was misdiagnosed because I had no problems showing up on my colonoscopy. I went off of sulfasalazine and lived normal for 7 years. I ate and drank anything I wanted and never had an issue.

This past February I started having problems and about 6 weeks, finally got rediagnosed with what the doctor called Crohn's Colitis. He says its mild, but it certainly doesn't feel that way. I've changed my diet to include no peanuts, popcorn, granola, etc. I'm not drinking beer or any carbonated beverages and continue to struggle. After a few rounds of prednisone, I weened off and tried to go only with sulfasalazine. That didn't work so we took Uceris (has some prednisone in it) for two months and now I am trying to go with only sulfasalazine again.

I haven't been able to get it together and frankly I do not remember what it was like transitioning off of medicine, what dietary changes were extremely effective, or anything else. Does anyone have any advice of what helped them? I know that I am extremely lucky that I have a mild case, but sometimes it simply doesn't feel that way. Any help is appreciated. I'm afraid of the next step if this doesn't work which will be the humaris or some other aggressive drug. Does anyone have any advice about flareups and how long it takes to transition off of the steroids? I don't want to put up the white flag too early if I start having diarrhea and issues again.

Thanks again. Sorry for the length.

Hi. No problem about the length. Sounds like you might need something stronger. Not sure bit you may need to go back on the prednisone. You may need some biologic like Humira or Remicade. Consult with your doctor. You said you had Crohns Colitis. You may need something like Lialda. Again, ask your doctor. He is the only one who can tell you what is best for you.

Welcome to the forum, but sorry you had to find us. Diets are very individual, what works for me, may not work for you. You could try keeping a food diary to try to find out your trigger foods. I have problems with red meat, dairy, caffeine, anything with a high fat content like chocolate or lasagna. I can eat some yogurt and hard cheese like cheddar. If you smoke, you should quit. When in a flare, try to eat bland foods like the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast. Then add one thing at a time. I do well with chicken and potatoes. You have a mild case now, but that could change. Take good care of yourself. :ghug:
