I have it sooooo bad :-( I take over the counter acid reflux pills they seem to work. I notice if I eat smaller meals throughout the day that helps as well :-( Good Luck

This past 2 weeks it's been happening on and off, I haven't taken anything for it other than milk. Usually they say drink milk to calm it down. Since i cant drink milk while flaring I eat ice cream hahah and it helps. But milk is a good way to go any kind you can use I think

yes that is my main GI symptom, well that and gastritis (which are the same, intertwined).
Currently I'm doing well with Nexium. Do not eat with in 2 to 3 hours before sleeping.

Have been suffering with acid reflux also quite bad leading up to bed time ..havent been doing much other than drinking milk /antacids ....dont know if thats just me burying my head in the sand though

Hi
I have GERD. It is a severe form of acid reflux. I was taking ranitidine and then omeprazole and now I am taking tectra. You can sleep with the head of your bed elevated with a brick. The theory behind this is that the elevation works against gravity and makes it difficult to come back up.
I was told not to drink milk even though I heard it coated the lining of the stomach and it did make it feel better... it actually wasnt.
dont drink coffee, or any pop and especially avoid alcohol.. No chocolate, tomatoes, citrus and do what you are already doing... eat smaller more frequent meals. For the most part, with foods - keep a food diary as everyone is different.
If you smoke, you might want to consider quitting, if you are overweight, it can cause problems with your esophagus...avoid high fat foods..it takes longer to digest and leave your stomach, etc, etc
Dont wear tight fitting clothing, stay away from broccoli or onions.. or any gas creating foods.
If you google GERD there is a tonne of stuff on there. The difference between acid reflux and GERD is the amount of times a week you experience it and how you respond to medication. They also will do an endoscopy to see the lining of your esophagus/inflammation.
It would be good if you start looking at GERD stuff to avoid getting it... it is basically the same care. There are also threads here on it.. if you search for GERD or acid reflux, something might come up.
Its not very pleasant is it ?? ...painful.
I found out I have GERD because I have a hiatus hernia. There is a sphincter in everyones esophagus near the stomach and it is meant to open and close when we eat and drink. The hernia is in the way of the sphincter keeping it open causing acid to splash up often, along with backwash of food, medication, etc. If you have it on a daily basis, you might want to ask about a endoscopy to see if there is something wrong with yours. Sometimes people's are too relaxed as well.

What helped me the most is the food journal. Write down everything and pay attention to what triggered it. Drink water only and slowly introduce liquid one at a time to see which one bothers it.
Good luck :) I hope you can get a handle on it (I found stress really made mine a lot worse as well). The longer you can avoid PPi's....the better...

I only have it when my UC flares. I drink aloe vera juice (George's), and that really seems to help, especially before bed.

Kala..
are you on meds for your UC? and if you are, did you notice if it helped it? I havent had any crohns drugs yet and have always wondered if it is part of Crohns..

iv always had acid reflux type symptoms. even got treated with nexium and similar drugs but my dr said it was the crohns.

I have reflux disease too, but I don't tend to get acid coming back up, just whatever is the last thing I drank (so it doesn't burn or hurt). I use Gaviscon Advance when necessary, as this forms a physical barrier over the stomach contents. My Crohn's is under control, my GI thinks I may have a hernia, but doesn't see the value in doing a scope when the Gaviscon works just fine.

On a slightly different note, could a hernia be caused/aggravated by violent vomiting? Because that's how my symotoms first started.

I started getting reflux issues fairly recently, around December 2010 or so. I'd notice that sometimes when I bent over, I'd literally feel my stomach juices coming up my throat towards my mouth. And then I'd feel like vomiting, but it was odd - like I was going to vomit but I didn't have nausea! It was unsettling! I might have a hiatal hernia causing my reflux but not sure yet.

I started taking over the counter 20 mg Omeprazole (generic Prilosec) a few months ago, but my GP didn't like me being on that one long-term so he prescribed 300 mg Ranitidine (generic Zantac). Both the Omeprazole and the Ranitidine work well for my reflux, I haven't had too many issues with it since I've been on meds. My advice is to check with your GP as there are various reflux meds on the market and some have more side effects than others. I believe most if not all of them can rob calcium from your bones so make sure you are taking a calcium supplement too.

i actual met the dr today, said i had gastritis, i think its similar to acid reflux - not too sure

I only take medicine when I have a flare. I am currently taking Rowasa (enema) daily, which has stopped my UC bleeding. I am really sensitive and don't react well to most oral medicines. I also take probiotics (every day), and aloe juice when I don't feel well. It is interesting that most people with IBD have acid issues at some point. For me, it only happens when I have a flare. Even when I was pregnant with my two children, I didn't get acid reflux.

ive got tablets although ive been told not to take them when i dont need them so i dont...but think i might take them all the time to see if that helps. i used to notice a difference with certain foods but just latley it seems to be all foods that cause it. especially fizzy drinks...although i usually drink flat coke.

fed up of a burning throat :( last night i threw up and i swear there was lots of acid in itbecause my throat felt red raw.]

does acid reflux cause tummy aches aswell? because i have a very tender stomach and little pains there

Soda is the worst for your stomach!!! It may feel like it settles it for a while, but it is one of the most acidic things around. You can even pour soda down a clogged drain and it helps clear it because of all of the acid it contains.

I have had GERD for 13 years now and have also gastritis and duodenitis (inflammation of the doudenum). I do agree with what Keona said. You have to change your life style. I sleep on 4 or 5 pillows and have done that for many years now. Be aware of milk. My doc told me that drinking milk takes you in a viscious circle: you have heartburn, you drink milk, it relieves your pain temporarily and then it aggrevates the pain again, so you drink milk again and so on.
Be careful with food: no fats, spices, citrus food.
Do you vomit or just reflux? If you do vomit a lot, test for H.pylori.
I take nexuim 80mg as the type of GERD i've got necessitates high doeses and an antivomiting med (sometimes zofran shots).
The last thing is that you have to have an upper endoscopy to diagnose the cause and give you the right med. I was told that my case has become chronic because it was not diagnosed correctly from the beginning. I was reluctant to undergo any endoscopies at that time.
Take care.

13 years!
that might be the scariest thing i've read about anything related to crohn's. I have had GERD for 2 years already. i hope this doesn't go on forever
i miss enjoying food!

my rhemy once said that the more you take heartburn medication for to long you become stuck taking it forever. I keep hoping that, that's not true.

I was having increased problems with acid last summer, to the point my voice was getting hoarse and felt like clearing my throat constantly, Doc prescribed lansoprazole but looking back this was probably a preliminary symptom to my flare up that is full fledged right now.

I've got it so bad it actually causes burns in my esophagus and up in my sinuses at night. I take prescription Prevacid, works OK. Mountain Dew is my soda of choice to cool it off lol!

I've been suffering from GERD for a while. When I had my last upper endoscopy, my doctor told me that I had black marks in my stomach from erosion. I've been on many different things and have found that Rinitadine, Mylanta, and Papaya are the only things that bring me relief with no added side effects.

I used to take prilosec morning and evening but it stopped working so the GI switched me to nexium ( 2x day) and zegerid when it's especially bad. I tend to wake up at night choking and spewing acid out my nose. That's always pleasant.
