Ok, I know youll probably say "are you trying to kill yourself"... haha Im not talking when your flaring but when you feel better, what type of alcoholic drinks can you mostly tolerate without a problem or too much or a problem?

Mixers. I can usually tolerate anything but beer. I typically drink Lady Bligh Rum, Irish Mist, Limoncello, Ancient Age Bourbon, Meade, or Irish Whiskey. I'll also go with flavored vodka. The latest was an awesome vodka called Pinnacle Strawberry-Kiwi flavored Vodka. Awesome in sprite and also poured over watermelon chunks!

I go for wine and tequilla primarily, not together of course. Rum and vodka go ok as well. Basically if I drink in moderation it doesn't really have a noticeable effect on me.

Oh gosh that sounds good. I want one. Right now.

Got a little bit left. :D Now if I can just figure out how to pour it through my PC to get it to you...hrmmm. If I go offline for a while, you know why....

;)

I have a feeling if you could figure out how to do anything through your PC like that, you wouldn't stick to just pouring and offering drinks. ;)

BUT .. I've got an empty glass sitting right here just in case. :) It sound so yummy!

Nevermind. My tech friend said he didn't want to fix my computer yet again, after he recently did it. But at least you know the name of it. It's a 70 proof and tastes crazy good.

I love a glass of chilled white zinfandel wine - could drink the bottle! Used to drink vodka and lemonade but cant handle fizzy juice now. x

I know when I have Smirnoff that is a big killer for me... so I guess this means all types of vodka isnt good

Red wine is good for me. I can handle a beer or two, no more than that. Haven't really tried anything else. Use to like to drink screwdrivers, voka and cranberry, and Jagermeister. Haven't had them lately though just mixed drinks at restaurants...always go with something with rum or vodka in it, something fruity.

I can tell you what NOT to drink - Screwdrivers! :ybatty:
Yeah, I tried drinking one of those, but the screwdriver got caught in my throat and once I finally got it down it played havoc trying to come out the other end.

;)

Up until this past weekend, red wine was my absolute vice. Love it! Love it! Love it! But last Friday...OMG! It probably had something to do with the quantity , but Saturday was a day I never want to experience again! I still don't think I've properly recovered. Ugh.

Since I stopped tolerating beer a couple of years ago, I'll be on the wagon for a while...plus I'm back on the flagyl...

That brings me to another point. Has anyone ever had any alcohol while on flagyl? I have heard that the absolutely no alcohol thing is a myth. I am not willing to sacrifice my gut to find out, but I was just curious.

That's why you need to get hammered instead lol

When i'm not flaring, wine is my vice! I love love love wine. Nothing better than a chilled bottle of wine, a takeaway and a dvd for a lazy night in.

I have been known to have a little tipple when i'm flaring, but I had vodka and coke and I was ok. On another occasion I had a couplle of glasses of wine and I was terrible afterwards. I haven't done that again.

Rum+coke is good for me. I like to take a little swig of rum and chase with the coke, that way I drink way less coke overall

I found I was okay with beer as long as I limited it to 2 pints in one night and then didn't drink again for a week or so. Although, if I drank less than that per night but drank multiple nights in a row I would have a lot of problems.

I recently decided that its just not worth it to me if it is potentially doing long term damage, no matter how minor. It wasn't too tough a decision though since I've never really been a heavy drinker.

I'd really like to still be able to enjoy some red wine once in a while, and I have been meaning to do some tests to find out if it is okay or not. I haven't gotten around to testing yet, so I'm not drinking at all right now.

ok am not trying to promote illigal stuff but, I drink Beer, Vodka, Teqilla you name is I drink it, Vodka+RedBull is just super for me BUT I have a litill trick to keep all of this in order.

Don't do it. It has an antabuse effect, not something you want to do.

Shadycat I was told that NO alcohol when you are on flagyl it will cause vomiting and it is not good. I don't think it is a myth. My sister tried it and she was so sick..

I've found that i can't drink beer really at all anymore.. one maybe two at the most. I never had a problem before I was diagnosed. Also, no coolers for me..the sugar is the killer. I have found that vodka or rum are ok. I can't mix them with pop. I don't drink very often but when i do i just mix water and vodka and sometimes a bit of crystal light mix. I have never had a problem with vodka and water. Wine is sometimes ok..but only in small amounts. Hope that helps a bit.. but it is different for everyone. I have found that most people I know with Crohn's have a problem with beer though so I would caution to be careful with beer and also dark liquors.

I am so missing wine. Does anyone drink while on pred (and pentasa). My doctor said no but I am so tempted over Christmas. Will someone please tell me a small glass will be OK.

But then I so want to get well - maybe it is not worth the risk.

Alcohol has never bothered my Crohns. Except wine, oh how I hate wine :puke_r:
I only drink on occasion though.

Sorry to not be a help on this....

I really wouldn't, unless you don't mind the pain

Yup, I have always liked the odd drinking evening but have been scared to try since diagnosis. Have had two nights out this month with a work do and a frien's birthday and so wanted to have a drink but didn't. I still had fun but felt a bit envious of everyone else getting merry. Both nights I went home earlyish (well b4 midnight) as once wveryone else was all silly it wasn;t so much fun being the sober one. Must learn to be social sober!

Just be the DD. That's what I plan on doing.

Same here. To much for me to risk, at least right now.

Drinking don't really give me much trouble, though every bowel situation is different. I'm on Pentasa. Used to drink on Prednisone, back in my 20s and didn't have issues with that. I kinda have to plan for it and take some antacids first, as it tends to give me heartburn, which in turn bothers my guts. So, if you do decide to try it, and I'm not saying either way if you should or shouldn't, go slow. If it starts to give you cramps, don't do no more.

Wow Miss Rose, I have been drinking as usual whilst on Pred and Pentasa... Have been ok with it. But, now I am thinking about the reliability of my doctor as he never mentioned anything about it being a problem!

I tend to drink red wine, about 1 glass every 2-3 days, usually with meals and have little problem.

Binxy, there is nothing in either of those medicine notes which said not to drink alcohol so I would guess it should be OK. My doctor was more concerned with getting my symptoms under control and asked me if alcohol was a trigor for me. I don't think it is but I haven't really figured it out yet so I have decided not to drink at all at the moment until I have figured out what is going on with me. I am not sure I could drink just one small glass anyway - I would very soon find I was at the end of the bottle.

Pineapple and Vodka or Pineapple and Capt. Morgan's usually goes down smooth for me. Being a recently graduated college student, I have sampled many different drinks. Beer is the WORST. Too much carbonation I think. I usually do vodka because it's a clear liquid.

I've never had a huge problem with wine, but too much is too much sugar. Same goes for the tasty stuff like mike's hard or twisted teas.

I've taken soda as a mixer as well, but once again, sugar AND carbonation. I've heard pineapple makes things easier to digest, so naturally I drink it with every alcoholic drink I have. I drink about 8oz of pineapple juice a day besides that.

I felt brave enough today to try my first beer in a few weeks, while watching my Ravens crush the Patriots! No adverse reaction yet.....:beerchug:
Next test will be my fav mix....Cpt. Morgan & cranberry juice! ....in moderation of course.

I thank god I don't drink alcohol - stopped when I was 19, thought it was a stupid path and all my family were alcoholics, so I had really nothing to look forward to - watched too many family members kill themselves from alcohol (directly or indirectly).

However -- when I wasn't eating (couldn't eat) and losing weight from Feb - December 09, my doctor tried all kinds of appetite helpers, but nothing worked. He thought I should try marijuana for pain/munchies. I did, and frankly it was a complete red herring.

Don't get me wrong on being against it, I'm totally for medical mj and legalization.. but, when you do it for medical reasons (real medical reasons - in California is completely legal as far as Im concerned, getting it is like going to the drug store)... it masks the pain and makes you complete useless for 3-6 hours a day.

It also makes you so hungry that you ignore what is good for you diet wise... I pride myself on having a clear mind, always have been all my life, so this was 1) no fun doing alone (mj is a social drug and when I was a kid it was fun) and 2) really doesn't address the core problem, mal-absorption and the disintegration in my case of my Colon).

I thought it really added insult to injury in that what I was eating was crap and I still was losing weight like mad... so I stopped in December and threw it out. I feel better now off it, frankly. I tried it for 2 months and it wasn't going anywhere.. also, you need to take into account your loved ones around you, I didn't think my wife particularlly liked me being stoned, since she has never seen me on anything...

I wish those who do it and have success all the best.. I'll stick to watching a good movie or riding a roller coaster to get my thrills, drugs in most forms don't do it for me.

I do say though, stopping mj is quite easy, unlike several times when I was on heavy duty opiates for pain and stopped and the withdrawls are the worst, I've learned to taper them when I use them. Lately though, I haven't needed a pain med in 10 days, which to me is just fantastic... I just wish I felt as good today as I have the last five, pain was back today, but we can't expect roses every day.

I've taken the tact that my condition is mainly based on my horrid diet, which I've made great pains TO CHANGE WITH A PASSION in the last 15 days to change.. and I'm not going back. Some of you have seen my SCD diet posts, I'm holding on to that as my way out for now, since NO drug has helped me... and I refuse to think about any surgery until I'm dying in the Hospital and I have ZERO choice.

I'm glad I said no to it and I began to get my head out of my ass with regard to how I eat... therein lies my problem

For New Years I had champagne and beer. No problems, except a tiny hangover. I don't drink often, though.

I just turned 19, so I've been drinking here and there when I go out with friends. However, I'm having a minor flare up at the moment, and I have no idea how alcohol will affect that. Most people seem to agree that wine is ok, so I might have a small glass and see how it goes down. Does anyone have any advice? I know not drinking is the best option, but I really want to discover what my limitations are. I'm used to the pain anyway!

HI Sarah and welcome to the forum, perhaps you can tell us your story of your diagnosis and what drugs you are on and how you found us.

Alcohol in general isnt good in large quantities, in Crohns even small amounts CAN affect you. Once in a blue moon (if I am off Flaygl cause it cannot be mixed) I will have a glass of red wine, and with a full stomach. It really depends on your disease stage and of course what medicines you are on. Alcohol intestifies drugs and could make you ill. Everything in moderation. But if you feel sick afterwards then I wouldnt do it.

Glad you found us hope you let us know who you are and where you are from. :)

Has anybody put the Flagyl thingy to the test? I am paranoid that even with one glass of alcohol that I will be violently ill. I'd like to crack open the bottle of Beaujolais that I bought right before I started the Flagyl, but it's not worth me puking my guts out. I am on 500mg of Flagyl and Cipro 2xdaily.

YES!! :eek2: And dont even have an ounce of it, nothing. I was naive (young at the time) and had one beer, and I was soooooooooooooo sick, when it says DO NOT drink Alcohol it is for a reason. :poo: I wasn't pooping, my head was above it and I know from experience dont do it. Even if you take cough syrup and cold medicines they have alcohol in them so read your label. I double checked with my personal pharmacy lol, they ALL know my by first name and she said it will make you very sick... nuff said!

I have found that I handle Cider really well. I have cut out most booze, all beer except for Cider. And the only other alcohol I consume is the occasional rum based Trader Vic Tiki drink.

Cider is all good for me. Drinking coke makes me feel sick the next day so will have vodka with orange juice. Mainly drink whisky or ale, not sure if they do cause any problems yet but will have to see. Im on pentasa and came off predfoam a few mnths back but the doc said i didnt have to change my drinking habits (or diet for that matter)

Pares Balta organic red wine for me.

http://www.paresbalta.com

I ain't no connoisseur. I drink it because it's red wine, organic, and cheap;
so it packs a big resveratrol punch at a great price. Packs quite a punch period.

I'm chock full of antioxidants at the moment!

VODKA.......I am Russian.....have always drunk vodka and hopefully always will! ;)

Where are you from? I've been to Saint Petersburg a few times myself.
My daughters go to Russian school, actually.

It is interesting that your girls go to Russian school? Is there an interesting reason? ;)

Well, I was hanging around Helsinki back in 2001. If one hangs
around Helsinki long enough, sooner or later, one meet Russians.
Well, I, from my frozen world, and her, from her frozen world, met. We've been freezing together for nine years now. Luckily, the friction of our love warms our lives.

Vodka. Ouch. Our wedding reception was in a Russian field. The rivers flow with vodka there. I drowned in it that day.

the bottom of an eski filled with Stolichnaya or whatever the Russians are drinking atm ;)

Back in 2002, at that moment, it was Flagman vodka....lots of it!
I remember one fellow, he couldn't speak much english, he was a good
friend of my wife's, he said, very heavily accented, "Roger, you have some
liver left, no?"
"Um, I hope so"
"Good, Roger, we kill your liver tonight, okay?"
"Ummmm, okaaaayy."

Being from alcoholic Nova Scotia, I thought, sure, I'll show these Russians how
we drink round these parts.

I pounded back the vodkas, declining the wimpy food breaks everybody else seemed to be taking. My wife later told me that they were amazed I was drinking so much vodka and not eating in between drinks. That's their secret to drinking so much...you eat between the shots. Fools like me just drink and drink and drink.

I was the first one to pass out, although all did eventually. Man, I passed out at suppertime while everyone was playing football in the field. I remember the children putting a blanket over me so I wouldn't sunburn (it was summer).

I didn't kill my liver that day, but it was attempted murder at least!

I never flared so often as when I was binge drinking and living the college life. Like everything moderation is key.

I cant drink now that I am flaring but when I was in remission I tried my best not to push my luck. Red wine has always killed me even when in remission. Its like drinking battery acid to me.

Gin and soda with lime is always tolerated nicely. Although I never have more than 3 drinks during an event. Gets me tipsy enough without the hangover. lol.

Since my symptoms appeared in October, I haven't been able to have even a sip of wine. Accidentally swallowing mouthwash can have me doubled over for 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to a nice glass of white wine sometime again in the future!

So.... I will admit I have been experimenting with rum. It has been a nice change I will admit. As long as I watch how much. More than three and I am hating life. 2 is about perfect at least for me. Each about a 1 1/2 oz or so. Its definitely an interesting change.

Personally, I don't have any problems with alcohol (even in combination with meds).. at all. A part from the inevitable hang-over.;)

But I have to say my crohn's hasn't been active for 6 years now. I would have no idea how I would react when it'd be active..

Vodka, Lemonade, ice and a slice of lemon goes down a treat, but lager and beers cripple me, and I hate wines

This seems to be a regular topic.
I'll give my usual reply.....

See my avatar....!!!!!!

Seriously, I have never found beer effecting me in any way apart from hangovers.
Everyone is different though. No particular food has ever effected me, so perhaps that's my advantage.

Imagine the shame, Irishman, not allowed to drink..... I'd never live it down... ;-)
