Bowel Surgery Warning for Unplanned Emergency Surgery in the UK

Good article.

I can't cut and past on my phone.

10% die within 30 days of an unplanned, emergency bowel surgery.
Risks are a lot higher in emergency surgery.
I'm really glad they have identified problems. This means improvement is possible.

I really want to see that number a lot lower.

I had emergency laparotomy, my doctors were wonderful. I'd gone to the A&E at my nearest hospital, one surgeon there was planning to operate but then another doctor there got an ambulance to transfer me to my usual hospital where they knew me and were far more specialised, and had free Intensive Care beds.

Some hospitals and doctors take good care of you. I think it's worth people finding out the standards of hospitals they'd potentially go to, as you don't know when an emergency may happen. I was very lucky that the first doctor I saw figured that out for me.
