Crohns, Humira and Staph Infections

Hello Everyone!

So I guess I'll start at the beginning.

In November 2013 I went to the emergency unit with a very painful lump right near my bumhole. It was found to be an abscess and I was operated the next day for its drainage.

2 months down the track and my doctor gives me the news that they believed I had a fistula and that they would have to give me and colonoscopy and possibly a seton placement. The colonoscopy showed that I had Crohn's disease and another 2 abcsess in my bum that also needed seton placements.

So here I am only just being told I had Crohn's disease and now had 3 setons in place to allow the abscesses to drain. I met with my Crohns specialist Dr.Begun who put me on 6mp only for it to cause serve rashes on my hands.

That was then stopped and I was put on Humira. All was/is going well with it but last week I was admitted into hospital with a staph infection on my right upper thigh. I was for 6 days getting pumped with Iv antibiotics and am now home taking oral tablets.

I am now obviously really scared to touch anything dirty and am continually washing my hands every 5 mins because I hate hospitals.

Just want to know if there is anyone else out there who has experience what I have experienced.

Thanks Ellie

hi ellie. yeah im currently on humira now and have been for the past 6 years. humira( i believe) is one of the more "dangerous" of the meds. it does a dream on keeping the crohns in check but it does leave you very vulnerable to other infections. if u find that u are feelin sick( other from crohns obv) consult a doctor because u cant just take any medication with humira, even if u think u have the simple cold b careful. nearly all antibiotics dont work or cud make u worse if taken with humira.
i also had three fistuals, the third of which i am dealin with now but this is the first one that i am gettin a seton for and have no experience or much knowledge about it. if u dont mind me asking but how was the procedure/recovery/living with it like?

Yea it's sucks because my crohns is going well but I don't want to be in a out of hospital with. Infections. When I first was told that I would need setons I was pretty scared. But there working really well and once you get the hang of them you don't really notice them. I have/had 3 setons and it was pretty difficult to clean after a poo. Normally at the start if it all I had to shower after every poo. But I worked out how to clean it properly and now don't have to have showers. Also I had 1 seton removed and that's made it ten times easier to clean! As for healing/recovery. At the start of it all you notice it because you feel like you have to poo but you soon get use to it. Also sometimes my setons move and becomes quiet uncomfortable because there ae nots in it. I just move it back when that happens. Acts like a piercing.
