Diagnosed In May

I was diagnosed in May 17. And my crohn's is under control at this time. But the joint pain you all are talking about is horrible. Sometimes just getting up from my desk I want to cry. And my PCP won't prescribe or send me to someone to help with this. I take ibuprofen when I can't stand it no more. Would love to sleep through the night one time. I'm glad to her that I'm not alone.

Hi Angela,

You may want to ask about Amitriptyline or Tylenol#3. The amitriptyline helps me sleep and really reduces joint pain at a fairly low dosage, plus it's cheap. The tylenol #3 is for extra bad days (or nights). There is such a thing as a pain specialist, you may want to ask for a referral to one.

Welcome and keep in touch,

Chris

Your PCP won’t refer you to a rheumatologist? That’s pretty standard for joint pain with IBD. Can you ask your GI to speak with your PCP (I’m assuming your PCP has to provide the referral)? You shouldn’t be in this much pain.

Thank you Chris,

I had heard that Amitriptyline would help. When I went to follow up with her 4 months after being hospitalized for a week, talked to her about amitriptyline. She acted like i was just wanting another pill told me to take Ibuprofen. But called the Triage today and told them how she acted the last visit and suggested it again or to send me to a rheumatologist.

My 4 month check up from being hospitalized tried to talk to her about some of the medicines I had heard and researched to help. She acted like she did not hear me. This morning called again to talk to triage and told them exactly what we talked about at the last visit. My GI sent her all the records. My first flare up she said it was nothing and but anxiety. Second flare up I was hospitalized for a week. Calling Rheumatologist myself to see if I need a referral. I agree should not be! Thanks for letting me rant!

I thought ibuprofen was a bad idea with Crohns, and can make it worse? My GI tells me not to take the stuff as a general rule - or in the case of a temporary, severe pain such as toothache, only to take it for a short while and to make sure of eating food with the medication.

I had joint pains and arthritis on my neck, all of my joints and back. According to my GI, medicines are masking the issue (or in other words addressing the symptoms instead of the source of the problem). So he put me on a combination of probiotics available in stores (a cocktail consisting of kefir milk, lassi, pomegranate juice, l-glutamine) + VSL. That worked wonders for me... give this a shot if you are willing to try..
