Does it bother you when people with IBS think you pretty much have IBS too?

I don't know why this gets to me but it does. I was talking to a pregnant coworker who has IBS about pregnancy and how awesome it is and how excited I am for her, when she says, "Pregnancy does GI miracles for people like us, when you get pregnant you'll see." Now I'm sorry if this is rude but I'm currently flaring and am down 10 pounds and feeling like crap. And she KNOWS I have Crohn's. Do people think that Crohn's is a different form of IBS or something? Sorry, just wanted to vent.

Yes I bothers me. I had to tell a bookstore to take crohns books away from eating disorder and nutrition books. Ignorance will never go away but we're here, and we know (not exactly, but damn close) what you're going through.
I recently saw a comic strip saying "Broken hand? I just got a papercut, so I know just how you feel!"
It's frustruating! Feel free to vent up here as much as you need. I know it sure makes me feel better.

Omg!emily!!it so does! I do love my mother.so do! She has ibs and recently had a stomach virus. Now, this woman has lovingly been there for each of my several surgeries even in a different country.. However..I have just been released from the hospital with kidney stones and a flare, feel like crap, tell her how I feel when she asks me..then she says..wait for it..'I know just how you feel!im so nauseous'.. I thought..hmm..really?! Do you feel like you may never stop pooping and seeing blood in te toilet?how about crippling pain? Oh dear.. I'll stop there!i smiled at her and said..'I bet'!

Yes it's very frustrating! I know sometimes they just are looking for someone to relate to but it sucks when they assume that it's the same thing. It most definitely is not!

I normally say, "The constant bleeding and shedding of the intestine wall is the worst/most painfull part dont you think? oh dont you get that with IBS?"

There are a few people here who do say pregnancy does help though :p

Pregnancy rule of thirds for Crohn's: 1/3 improve, 1/3 no change, 1/3 worsen. More likely to have worsening symptoms if flaring at conception to first trimester. It is irritating when people compare apples to oranges. The responsible thing to do is patiently educate on the differences and express the feeling that we don't appreciate comparisons. Of course easier said than done when you're mood is swinging from drugs and you've been on a liquid diet for weeks...

My auntie has 'suspected' IBS, not even a proper diagnosis and she draws comparisons between us all the time. It literally is the most annoying thing ever. She will says things like...'oh I've tried this bikram yoga, it's done wonders for my tummy, maybe it could cure you'...then when I say I'm too tired to go she makes out like I'm just being lazy!!

Seriously, when did a syndrome become 'just like' a chronic disease?

People see you through their own filters. I can't remember to whom I should attribute this quote...

"People don't see you as you are, they see you as they are".

Yes, I really think they do, even some Dr.'s I've talked to called it IBS when it is IBD. Then they send you to another Dr. who is worse than them. Then I found a good one on my own, finally!:thumleft:

I am in the middle of a flare. The only days of work I missed were the days I was in
the hospital. One of the people at work is taking weeks and weeks off for IBS!

Seriously?

Why is it when I am getting ready to leave and go somewhere, every single time, I get my coat and boots and hat and all that on and i'm ready to walk out the door and BAM! I have to go???? Anyone else have this happen?:poo::yfrown:Drives me nuts!!!

It makes my blood boil furiously when people compare diarrohea, a stomach bug, or IBS to UC and Crohns. Infuriates me beyond belief.

I feel differently. For one thing, lot of people who are diagnosed with IBS turn out to actually have IBD or some other problem.

The main reason I'm not bothered by the comparisons is that I think people with IBS have a hard time because it's not a diagnosis that is taken seriously. Doctors seem to use it as a way of saying there's nothing really wrong with a patient. They imply that people cause it themselves through lifestyle choices. And since it's supposed to be related to stress, it can imply something negative about a person's character. It's not a valid disease, and so people diagnosed with it aren't given the unspoken permission to have problems managing it, which they are probably more likely to get with IBD.

I've seen quite a few posts on this forum from people who were previously diagnosed with IBS (as I was) or currently diagnosed with it but are here because they suspect they may have Crohn's who have experienced this kind of thinking, especially from medical professionals. And when it comes to the embarrassment and social factors, IBS could probably match some cases of IBD.

If it comes down to general levels of health, absolutely people with IBS have it easier. Severity of symptoms will generally be much worse for people with IBD, though there are probably exceptions (mild Crohn's or severe IBS). Operations, medications, etc. are all negatives that people with IBS don't have to deal with. But I wouldn't be too bothered by the comparisons, even if they are inaccurate, because I think many people with IBS have a hard time in other ways. Or at least I wouldn't be any more annoyed by someone with IBS thinking they're as sick as someone with IBD than by other situations in which inaccurate assumptions are made about IBD.
