Finally diagnosed, big relief :)

Hello all,

My name is Odette, I'm a 27 year old Dutch girl.It may sound weird but I am ''happy'' to know I've got Crohn's.

I got taken into hospital last week for ongoing bloody diarhoea, and after an endoscopy they diagnosed me with Crohn's.

I've had diarrhoea for about 10 years now, severe cramps and usually at least six wastery stools a day. The past year the complaints worsened, I started to fart blood, have incredibly loud farts and feel sicker and get more stools.

But my doctor had decided years ago that I just had IBS and kept sending me away until last tuesday. I had been bleeding 4 times an hour since friday evening and he finally decided to send me to the ER. The hospital checked me in and did a colonoscopy last week, and thursday I got the definite word on it.

Finally I'm being taken seriously and treated, and because of that i'm finally in less pain than I've been for a good long while.

My docto has come to the hospital to personally apologise for his flailure to take me seriously, that was nice.

The medicine seems to work as well, my stools are getting better than they've been in years. Gives me hope for the future.

All in all, finally.

I get you - i'm currently undiagnosed and have my colonoscopy this coming Saturday, consultant thinks it's crohns due to my symptoms, but I can relate to what you are saying, it will be a relief just to know what is going on.

I hope your road to recovery is a smooth one and you get the support you need.

On a side note, any Doctor that can diagnose IBS with no tests needs to be awarded a medal, as they obviously have X-Ray vision. Poor doctoring, but nice he came in to see you and apologise for his failures.

Good point that, I might go check what standard IBS testing actually entails. It is kind of strange that he never thought of anything else..

Glad you got your diagnosis! While it may not be fun knowing you have Crohns, I'm sure it's a great relief to find out exactly what it was! Best of luck

Hi Odette,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had to suffer for so long before getting a diagnosis and help. I'm glad that you're finally getting some treatment that is helping! I think it's understandable that you'd be pleased and relieved after all you've been through - I'm sure there are others here who can relate. It seems our symptoms are too often dismissed for too long.

What meds were you put on?

Hoping you continue to see improvement!

What medicine did they start you on? I've dealt with docs not taking my symptoms seriously and its so frustrating. I hope that you are able to go into Remmision now, and continue to see a specialist. Stay the course.

Dear Odette
I'm in the Netherlands too. I think you have to die here first before they take an illness seriously. I have a similar story. I share your happiness that you feel better and that you can look forward to feeling better in the future. Good luck!
