Flagyl

Docs added flagyl on top of everything else to avoid obstruction. Stuff is so nasty to get down I need a hard candy after. Has flagyl helped with inflammation for you guys?

Never taken it for Crohn's. I don't see how killing off all of the bacteria helps in the slightest unless the inflammation is all/mainly bacteria (don't see how that's possible either).

Doesn't your probiotic contain live bacteria? The flagyl is just going to kill off that bacteria as well. So unless there's something else in the probitic that you need, you're wasting money by taking them together.

Is flagyl the little pink (maybe orange) pill? If so, I was given it to help kill bacteria after surgery for my abscess I was completely fine with it until one day I smelt the bottle. Eww! Ever since I had to have a strong juice to take it with. It was all I could taste in my mouth. Thank god I was only on it for a week though.

I personally don't think I was on it long enough to notice a difference though.

Matt was on Flagyl for 6 months, 3 months pre op and 3 months post op.

At diagnosis it was identified that he 10cms of his terminal ileum was inflamed with a further 5cm, at the proximal end, showing signs of very mild inflammation. He was commenced on Azathioprine, Prednisone (approx 2 month regime) and Flagyl for 1 week. About a week after completing Flagyl he started to develop signs of complications, turned out to be a perforation, fistula and abscess. He was then commenced on Flagyl again and another antibiotic, Augmentin duo forte which he stayed on until surgery 3 months later. During this time they were able to stabilise him and reduce the inflammation considerably and at the time of surgery the affected area remained at that 15cms he was originally diagnosed with.
Although at times I have questioned the effectiveness of the medication he was taking in hindsight I have to admit that they obviously did help to keep the inflammation contained to that 15cm segment.
Flagyl is used for it's antibiotic properties as the process of inflammation does seem to produce infection but it is also used because studies do suggest that it does have anti inflammatory properties. The 3 months he was prescribed it post op was because the Crohn's specialist indicated that research seemed to support the theory that 3 months of treatment post operatively increased a patients chance of maintaining a long term remission.

Matt took 400mg three a day and post op 200mg three times a day. He did not appear to suffer with any side effects and never had issues with the taste except when he tried the cheaper generic Metronidazole, he found it unpalatable due to the powdery coating it had.

Here the 400mg tablet is on the larger side and pale yellow, the 200mg is the same only little smaller.

Yes it does help. It works great for me but unfortunately, it is often working only while I take it. Metronidazole is a narrow spectrum antibiotic that works on specific bacteria of the digestive track which are at some point responsible for the inflammation. That's one of the thing they give for people that are having intestinal trouble linked to overuse of NSAID (which can lead to over growth of bacteria that induce the inflammation). It works for us too, fortunatly. But yeah, it taste like sh*t.... I eat tic tac all day long cause I can't stand the remaining bitter  taste...

It's a white pill here in the states but it's generic so depending on the manufacturer there could be several varieties in the country. I don't think my current regiment is doing anything I'm in a lot of pain and very tender. I hate crohns.

:( Sorry to hear you are suffering...
I hope it gets better soon for you. It usually takes 3-4 days before I feel some relief with the antibiotics... Hopefully it is a matter of time for you too.

I hated mine. It's the generic version metronidazole. I have to swallow it with a mouthful of water or juice. In the past I have wrapped it in a fruit roll up. The after taste is horrible. I get very fatigued while on it. I also dehydrated but water tastes bad because I can still taste the meds. I do feel it works. I just take it for long enough for the inflammation to go down. It also closed a fistula I had. So it works just not something I can stand long term.

flagyl...never kept it down long enough to make a differance. Plus the ER doctor prescribing it told me it wouldn't help my case so I took it a couple of days then tossed it. No sence in making myself sick if it wasn't going to help

It's the worst of all the anti-b's. That metallic taste just doesn't go. GI told me not to take it with juice or anything citrus-y as it makes the taste worse. I took it with plain water and it was just as nasty. I was taking it along with cipro recently for an abcess on my butt. GI said he could not drain the abcess as I am on blood thinners and there is a possibility of haemmoraging (sp) hence Flagyl and the other one. They did the job though in reducing the abcess although it's not completely gone, I can still feel a tiny lump there.

Yes it helped me with inflammation but I took it with cipro. It's very effective against c diff bacteria tha causes stomach ulcers. Logic would have it that c diff could cause colon ulcers.

Flagyl helped me. Was on it for maybe 2 months. I started getting neurological side effects so had to stop it. My GI doctor said he'll put me back on it for shorter periods of time if I have perianal Crohn's issues. Definitely look out for the neurological side effects like numbness or tingling in fingers, toes, (I also had a numb tingly nose, lol). And stop taking if you have these symptoms.

I didn't know that's where the tingling in the fingers and toes came from. Neither did my GI actually when I mentioned it to him. Hope things are going better for you.

Yep. That's the Flagyl giving you tingly fingers and toes. When I told my doctor about it he immediately took me off of it. I would stop if you get the tingling.

Things are much better for me now. Hope you are doing well too!
