Food additives causing gut inflammation

Often we hear eating unprocessed foods is essential in order not to aggrevate gut inflammaion. But I an curious to find out which food additives have been found to cause inflammation, and also why this is so.

I know of one kind, namely emulsifiers. Researchers have found that emulsifiers diseupt the mucus- bacterial interaction ( dissolves the protective layer).
Knowing this it will be wise to stay clear of chemical emulsifiers such as E466 found in cream cheese, ice cream and mayonnaise.

In another thread wildbill links to research stating that food grade titanium oxide is also causinf inflammation.

I am curious if anyont know of other additives, and the reason for avoiding them?
 
I dont know but I think it's still unclear what triggers inflammation... there is no official guideline yet about food or additive to be avoided infortunately.

I hope someone can drop some promising research on this though.

True, the official guidelines do not exist. That should not stop us from bringing forward the newest research in the field, so that we can make informed decisions about our diet.
Regarding the emulsifiers it seems quite established that they disrupt the mucus-bacterial balance in mice, and in humans. Knowing this, one could argue IBD patients would be wise to avoid emulsifiers as a precautionary measure.
I would be very interested in hearing about other such findings, and that is the idea behind creating this thread.

Hello, Carrageenan made from red seaweed is an emulsifier added to ice cream, lunch meats, Costco rotisserie chicken etc. etc. A highly regarded GI Doctor in Seattle was adamant I read all labels and stay clear of Carrageenan as it as she said: "rips your gut up". Avoid it like the plague. I avoid all emulsifiers and additives and eat as clean as possible. It has mad a big difference for me. Hope this info is helpful---take care!

I can't cite a specific study, however glyphosate is used extensively with GMO crops as they are resistant to this specific herbicide. When the field is sprayed the weeds surrounding the crop die off. The GMO product still absorbs the glyphosate but doesn't die off. Glyphosate, (Round Up) is also a powerful antibiotic linked to leaky gut syndrome. If you eat GMO's you have glyphosate residue included. Therefore it could knock down natural gut flora the same way amoxicillin or cipro would.

Independent researchers around the world are being shut down for trying to study the possible impacts of GMO's or pesticides unfortunately, so research is very scarce. Monsanto is powerful enough to stop science from investigating the truth. Monsanto only study rats for 3 months to verify toxicity of products.
Scientist Gilles ERic Seralini has found that it is at about 3 months that serious pathologies shows in rats...

To date I know of Gilles-Eric Seralini who has succeeded to show the negative impact of Round up and GMO's on mouses. his website is full of interesting info:

Monsanto is now spraying soybeans with a new chemical called Dicamba. Causing quite a stir. I stay clear of foods containing soy. This is hard, because soy is in most all processed foods. Soy is genetically modified and sprayed with the worst chemicals. This latest crisis with Monsanto just came out---google it. I avoid soy like the plague. Eat real whole foods, and as much organic as possible.

yeah they have to come up with other pesticides because the Round-Up-ready GMO plantations soy, corn, canola, etc. are now being invaded with super resistant weeds and plants like Palmer Amaranth. I avoid all processed foods and even my dog eats organic :D

Cool that you posted that Nature article. I saw Benoit Chassaing speak about emulsifiers, and I've been checking ingredient labels for carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate-80 ever since.
