GI doctor from hell!!!!!!

So i went to my GI today and he asked me how i was feeling. I told him im not getting any better and that Im still having a lot of pain issues. He asked me when im experiencing the most pain. I told him after I eat. He then proceeded to ask me what kinds of food am I eating. After I told him He proceeded to sit there and tell me Im doing eveything wrong. WHERE THE HELL DOES HE GET OFF?!?! he sat there and lectured me on how if i dont get my act together hes going to be seeing me in the emergency room fitting me for a colostomy bag. He told me I no longer should eat anything with fiber, nothing with wheat or whole grain, no fresh fruits or vegetables, and a whole bunch of other stuff. After he ran off all this stuff im not suppose to eat I looked at him and asked him what the hell he expected me to eat then?! He told me to figure it out!!!!!! can u believe that?!?! I mean I dont know about you guys but im not going to grouge my self in junk food just so my stomach will feel better but ill feel like crap from eating all this high fat high sugar crap. Then after he lectured me about that and I proceded to raise my voice to him he offered to perscribe me some depression pills to help calm my nerves!!!!!!! I was about ready to throw him out the window, I told him where he could shove that perscription in so many choice words. Arent doctors suppose to help you? I dont see where lecturing me would help me in anyway possible. I dont know but if i were him I wouldnt be worried about the food im eating id be worrying about the fact that after several different medications Im still out of remission and maybe we need to think of a new perscription plan or something, but i seriously wouldnt sit there and lecture someone whoes been in pain and sick for the past 6 months. GI doctors around here seriously are something else. there all arrogant buttholes:mad: . I dont know maybe its because there working around them all day or something but in there line of work they really need to learn to be a little more sensitive!!!!!! Ive decided im turely dont with my Specialist and seriously contemplating being done with all of them..... I just dont know what to do anymore. Im really tired of being sick, Im tired of being nausious im tired of being at work and running to the bathroom 5-6 times a day, Im tired of never being able to go out because i dont know if ill have to go or not, and all my doctor has done for me was give me some steroids and up my asacol. He's truely a piece of work. he can rot for all I care!!!!!!

I would get the hell out of there. If my parents were not in the room during some of my GI experiences then I think that my GI would have been dead by now. I am sorry for your experience.

Good luck

Jeff

MikesAngel, I am really sorry you had such a frustrating day today. We all have moments like this, when we are confused and after going to a place we think will get us some answers we leave more frustrated and confused. I know it is especially hard when you are expecting the doctor to help you, not make you feel worst. I do not know why your doctor was like that, and while I really would not recommend not seeing doctors at all I think you should consider switching. It is not worth the added stress of seeing someone you do not like or trust. If this is not possible then that is just the way it will have to go, but you can let your doctor know that you are feeling frustrated and confused and do not feel you are receiving support.

You just need to keep on fighting though. No matter how low you feel or how frustrated you are, you need to realize that things can and will get better. It is not easy having to work and feel the way you do now, but you need to keep going and keep working with the doctors or whoever you choose to see to get you feeling better. Just giving up will not help at all, and will just make you feel worst. Keep working with the people who have the power to make things better and you will recieve help.

As for diet, it sounds like your doctor was telling you about a low residue diet. While he was not very helpful about it, it really can allow for a balanced diet, and should be easier on your system as it does not contain nuts, seeds or a lot of fibre. I am currently on it and it is not too restrictive. Here is a copy of it (scroll down a bit to see exactly what is and what isn't allowed). http://www.cgh.com.sg/health_public/pamphlet/low_residue/low_residue_main.htm

You may want to go over this diet with a doctor or dietician/nutritionist if you can to make sure you can follow it and still get everything you need. I would really recommend trying it though, as it is unlikely to make you feel any worst and may help with some symptoms.

Please do not lose hope and feel free to get anything you need to out here. We are all there for you and are all hoping for you to keep fighting and take control back over your life

Mike- thanks so much for the low-residue diet info it really helped clear up a lot that my dr. lacked in. and I also wanted to thank you for this forum. it really helps people a lot in more ways than one and I think that your a great person for starting this. Thanks again!!! :p

No, thank you for taking the time to come here and post! This community is nothing without people like you posting, and I am so glad that you have felt comfortable sharing some of your experiences with all of us. I am no expert on Crohn's, but where I can help others out I will. I think the same goes for a lot of us here (except some people really are experts!) and since we are all dealing with some of the same issues, it makes a lot of sense to share our experiences and tips.

I am glad the information has helped you. I would try the diet and see if you see any results. It cannot hurt you so I think it is worth a try. If you have any questions about any of it, just post again or pm me. As I said before I am no expert so posting is likely going to get you the best answer(s).

Hi MikesAngel,

Sorry to hear about your bad day.

I've had more than one doctor frustrate me, but Mike is right, you can't just give up. It does sound like your doctor was pretty insensitive; maybe you could find a different doctor?

My daughter's GI doctor told her that a low-residue diet basically meant that she could and should eat soluble fiber when she wasn't in an acute flare-up (i.e. from cooked carrots, bananas, lettuce...stuff like that). He explained that the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber was that anything that passed in the toilet undigested should basically be considered unsoluble (i.e. popcorn kernals, corn, seeds, etc).

I know that there have been times when everything I have eaten has passed through seemingly undigested... But anyways: just thought I'd pass on his suggestion. BTW: I was dx with Crohns when I was 14 and my 16-year-old daughter was dx last summer.

Since we are all a little different as far as what foods we can or cannot tolerate, keeping a daily food diary might be a good idea.

I remember times when all I could eat was yogurt and Ensure Plus. You will figure it out... but your doctor could've been a little more helpful. I don't think physicians get the right kind or enough education in nutrition when they go to medical school (but I'd better not get started on that)!

Hang in there and stay strong - Tomorrow is a new day (wait, if you posted this on Monday it already IS tomorrow!) :D

MikesAngel21 oh my... This is no good. Get rid of him. I've found too that a lot of GI's lack in their bed side manner. I've dropped a "Top GI doctor from UofM hospital" because they were a douchebag. It took a long time and a boat load of GI doctors to find "the one." You just need to be in the mind set of "Drop that zero and find yourself a hero." I know I'm not a big help but I just wanted to though my two cents in and let you know that you just need to keep up the faith and we are here for ya.

ps... if your doctor dresses like a clown chances are he's really just a clown playing dress up...

MikesAngel are you still having trouble with your diet? I know what your saying. We really do not have much to eat. I wonder why he told you not to eat fruit though? I've been eating oranges, pealed apples, and strawberries. I had read somewhere to stay away from really sweet fruits like watermelon.
