Hi all

Got a date for my resection & its the 31st July.

Apparently they said I have to take some sort of a build up vitamin drink in the run up to it which has never been mentioned before. I wouldn't say I am that run down but just wondered if this is a regular thing now for resections.

Hiya, I was also given those drinks before the op, I had to have 4 the day before and then 2 on the morning - I had to get up before 5am to have these as I then was not allowed any drink etc. I was told they were to give the system a boost to get through the op and to aid recovery afterwards.

I hope things go well with the op, pls keep us updated on how you are doing.

Hi Angrybird

Thanks for replying.
Its the first time I have heard of these drinks but anything that helps recovery I am all for that.

Hi Kip, I got these drinks prescribed for the 3 weeks leading up to resection surgery , they are designed to tune you up for the surgery and to help offset the effect of the weight loss in the immediate time after the op. I was told try to to gain some extra pounds pre op for this reason and these drinks really do help supplement the diet and give you a good mix of minerals and vitamins so make sure the GP prescribes plenty - I think you can take 3 a day. The better health you are in pre op the better chances for you to make a speedy recovery. Good luck with the surgery..

Hi Kat-y
The pre op nurse phoned to say I needed them but as yet I have not been told for how long. To be honest I have put quite a bit of weight on at the moment so not too worried about weight loss.
Do you know if the drinks are high in calories & also I am a bit worried about having solid food after the op.

Hi they were high in calories but packed with all the vits + minerals you need and may not be absorbing in your diet. Get a load of multi vits etc as well and start with them. Tuning up pre op makes big difference to recovery it seems. Didn't get any solid food for a few days post op then just basic stuff ( ice cubes then jelly) was terrified how it would go but not a problem - they seems to be good at sticking bowels back together :) I had never been in hosp except to have a baby so it was a revelation being in High Dependancy ! pls ask if anything comes to mind...

Thanks.
I am starting to worry now. I go from being in pain & thinking well just bring it on so I can stop this, then when I feel a little better I am thinking nooooo!

Just remember surgery is the last thing they offer is there's any other options so you don't really have that much of a choice. It must need doing so the sooner the better. Less damage to you long term. Tough short term but should buy you better health longer term. Hang onto this in those times you feel ok and want to just cancel it !

I know what you mean. I was only diagnosed in November so when they first wanted to operate in February I said no but things became much worse so I knew It was my only option.
My mum has Crohns & I have seen 1st hand when It wants to It can really take a person down quickly.
Because of where my Crohns is they said that aza would not help but after surgery I will be put on it.

I have my resection scheduled for the 30th. As of yet I have not been told about any drinks, however I put on about 15lbs in last 6 months or so due to entocort so maybe they thought I didn't need the calories? Good luck!

Hi hlmurry
