Help Requested: Travel Insurance Company Recommendations

Hello,

I'm taking my first trip to Europe (Barcelona, Spain) at the end of the Summer and am trying to think of all that I need to do to prepare with regards to Crohn's. I will only be gone for a week but I am having trouble figuring out the following info:

1) Can anyone recommend some good (and affordable!) travel insurance companies here in the US that I can look into?

2) Is a note from your doctor required to take your medication? I take 6-mp and asacol HD as well as some supplements or can I just bring the meds without any problems?

3) Does the cost of insurance go up significantly if you declare you have Crohn's?

4) Are there other things I should be considering for this trip?

Thanks in advance!

I have been to Barcelona. It's a beautiful city but watch out for the pick pocketers. Wear a money belt!

Now on to your question. As long as your meds have your name on them you will be fine. I carry all my meds with me on board so it all goes through the scanner. You will be fine.

I'll post a link that has several sites to purchase your insurance through. One thing to remember is if you have a pre-existing condition you need to pay extra for it and they only give you so much time from when you book your trip. So read each carriers terms carefully. Ok, be right back with that link!

Although I'm from UK, when I recently travelled in Europe I didn't have a Doctors letter and was fine. As long as it's clear the meds are prescription - I had mine in the original box with my name on - you should be fine. If you are still concerned you could perhaps take a copy of your prescription with you? Like the previous poster, I took mine on in my hand luggage became I was concerned my hold luggage could go missing. If you have a lot of medication you could split it half and half.

Unfortunately I can't give you advice on US insurers but I booked through a specialist insurer and was surprised how cheap it was.

I travelled from UK to Australia in March and took all my drugs in their boxes which had my name on etc? I had no problems at all.

Thanks everyone! I like that SquareMouth site it gives me a number of quotes from various insurance agencies. I'll be sure to read the details of the terms for sure!

Good to know I won't need a doctor's note I just got a bit nervous that someone will take my meds from me.

When I've traveled with my medication in the past, I usually just bring it in the prescription containers I got them in, so that if I'm ever pulled aside I have proof of what they are and that they belong to me. I've never been questioned about it, though.

Otherwise, I unfortunately can't help too much since I'm in Canada and don't know what's available to you... but it sounds like you have the right idea for as to what to worry about. :) Just make sure you have enough medication to last the trip, and you should be fine.
