I emailed St Marks in London. They specialise in just Gastroenterology. They told me that my GP can refer J.

I think you need to be referred through your GP. Do you have any hospital in mind?

Thanks niks , I will be looking for a good children's
Hospital will have to do some research
Any ideas would be great x
How's your daughter doing?

She is hanging in there!! On her fourth B12 jab tomorrow and the numbness and dizziness does seem better.

Good luck with finding a hospital!! Must be so hard having such a little one so poorly at least J is much older and can understand better

Usually every referal starts with your GP. If you have a GP who's good and listens to you, they should be able to refer you to any NHS hospital you choose. Very occaisionally there may be an issue with NHS funding if you want to go to a hospital outside of your area, but if the GP believes there's a good reason for it (e.g. severity of symptoms or a need for a particular specialist) there shouldn't be a problem. And you're always entitled to at least two referals, so if you're not happy after one appointment, you're entitled to a second opinion.

The only problem that sometimes occurs is that you may be being referred to a particular consultant, but when you get there you find it's a different person you actually see. Sometimes appointment letters say - "You will be seen by [consultant's name] or a member of his/her team." If you find you're seen by a member of the team instead, you don't get much choice in the matter unfortunately.

Also, have a look at the Doctor Directory in this forum (there's a tab along the top).

Also try www.ratemds.com - you can specify UK and then gastroenterologist. The ratings simply come from contributors ratings so I don't know how valid they are but it's a starting point.

I used the ratemds.com to get a name for a second opinion - I chose a few that had a 5/5 rating, then looked up their bios (usually available at their hospitals website) and from their bios, found one that specialized in crohns. Unfortunately, his secretary said if we already had a GI, he declined the referral for just a second opinion. I'm now trying to arrange for another second opinion and this doctor's name I found in the forum directory, with a glowing recommendion and just two minutes from home.

Here is a link to www.mds.com

Apparently in the uk we have "patient choice" you can ask to be refered and they have to do it. We found out as my mum rang crohns and colitis uk and they advised us. It might be worth giving them a call.
Hope you get on ok.
