ibd 7

Has anyone ever had an ibd 7 blood test done? The samples have to be sent to california bc they are the only ones that do it. A new GI I am trying reccommended that I get this done and see if I could get another colonoscopy approved by insurance. Just wondering if anyones had it!

I haven't had it - but blood tests are relatively painless :) I don't see how it could hurt. But on the other hand, it might not help too much either...

As a lowly med student I've been shadowing a pediatric gastroenterologist for a little while; from what he's shown me, the IBD 7 is kind of a wishy-washy way of telling if someone has IBD. It gives a fair number of false positives and false negatives (in the 15-25% range), and is especially bad at telling if you have ulcerative colitis (up to 50% false positives). I think for this reason many GIs will not diagnose based on the blood test results alone, but they can use the results to help them interpret other findings (especially from colonoscopy).

Yes, I had this done - I think you're talking about the Prometheus IBD Serology 7. It was the only test that came back positive for Crohn's for me. Only things the scopes picked up were esophagitis and gastritis (both mild) so he would not dx. This blood test and a c-scope were the first things my GI did. He seems to think that the positive result could mean that I'll develop Crohn's later, but also admitted that many in the GI world think this test is "voodoo science."

Hope you get some results.

Is it just me or did anyone else think 'I'm a Crohnie, and IBD 7 was my idea'? But no, I haven't had this test myself, I was diagnosed from a good ol' colonoscopy.

Huh? You don't understand what I mean? Well, I had scopes done with biopsies, but no Crohn's found. The Prometheus Test said "Pattern Consistent with IBD: Crohn's Disease."
And then my doc, to cover his arse, won't come out and say definitely whether or not it's a false positive. Sorry to be confusing.

Actually, I myself don't understand Rebecca's post. :)

I've had it done and it came back negative. I definitely have Crohn's though and was diagnosed before the test. I would say have it done because it is just a simple blood test, but just don't rely too heavily on the results. Just make sure your insurance covers it because I believe it is pretty expensive.

I got it, Rebecca, and I'm in the US. I probably watch too much TV, ha ha.

For those that didn't get it, she was making fun of the Windows 7 commercials where they say, "Hi, I'm a PC, and Windows 7 was my idea."

I've had the test done and got a positive for crohns. I also had a colonoscopy confirm it as well

I've had this test down as well some other blood work. For me everything thing shows up negative and apparently according to the labs I am fit as a fiddle. The colonoscopy said different (which I was thankful for -- because it shows that I hadn't gone crazy).

From what I gather the labs work with some and not with others.

My son had it and it came back positive for Crohn's. The cBir1 marker test is included and I think it is not normally done in other blood tests. His scope biopsies had inflammation throughout his digestive tract ... but non-specific, and no lesions were seen. His diagnosis is still uncertain by the GIs - as they acknowlege the contraversy of the IBD7 test. Prometheus now has a new prognostic test for Crohn's that includes the IBD7 and a few genetic tests. I wish it included more genetic tests ...
