Just diagnosed, hello fellow sufferers!

Hi Ladies and Gents,

After 3 years of on off abdominal pain, nausea and generally feeling unwell, I have this morning been diagnosed with Small Bowel Crohn's. My diagnosis ffom seeing the Gastroenterologist and diagnosis was only about 6weeks, so I'm awfully lucky to have been referred to such a knowledgeable and pro-active specialist.

I'm lucky enough to not suffer the full blown symptoms that some of you guys do. I mainly suffer from intense stomach pain and nausea which endoscopy showed to be down to gastritis that wasn't H. Pylori related. A raised faecal calprotectin level prompted my gastroenterologist to arrange a small bowel MRI Enterography, which has shown extensive inflammation and narrowing of my small bowel. I didn't think I had Crohn's as I'm lucky to not experience some of the horrific symptoms that you guys do, notably with the bowel movements. However, I'm not surprised I've got the diagnosis as I kept up to date with all of the results of my tests and this forum provided many answers to the questions I had. I'm happy to have an answer however, even though it's not that answer I necessarily wanted (I'd have settled with Chronic Gastritis)!

Anyway, I'm a 21 year old male and have completed an entire engineering degree while suffering the horrific stomach pain that I get. Having gained a degree in Mining Engineering I'm slightly gutted to have been dealt the "crohns hand" just at the time when I was looking to start employment, however the truth is I'll probably now fail the medical for any offshore or remote location work which is what I really wanted to do. I guess I'll need to rethink my plans and adapt and overcome the hurdles put in front of me. I'd like to know if anyone works in either offshore oil and gas or remote location mining (anywhere, notably Australia) that has experience with going through pre employment medicals with this unfortunate disease?

I guess I just wanted to say my story, I'm obviously gutted to have been diagnosed, but also proud to be a part of this community where everyone is so supportive and the advice is excellent.

I'll be having an appointment with my gastro doc shortly to go on to whatever meds I need, she mentioned steroids so I'll finish up this post and go and have a read on the medication area of the forum.

Thanks for listening,

KC

welcome to the forum! I'm new to this as well.Diagnosed 11-13 with gastrodudenal crohn's and had a resection.I wouldn't be surprised that someone here is in your field of work and can help you with answers.I could put my two cents in about gas but not the off shore kind!:ylol:This a great place for support and again, welcome!

Welcome!

That is really impressive, 6 weeks to diagnosis. I was about 3 months from first Dr visit to diagnosis. It definitely makes job hunting and working harder but don't give up hope. There is many opportunities even for those with medical issues.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis and it's impact on your career goals. I don't know about your field but maybe through proper treatment you can still pass these tests in the future? I know there have been many things I wanted to do that have been hampered by crohn's. Gotta keep hope though and live within your means.
