Methotrexate and Vomitting

My son has been on methotrexate now for about 1year. He always feels a little more tired a day or two after, but lately he has been getting very sick the night of taking it and for a couple of days after. Has anyone else been ok taking the med and then it started not agreeing with you? We saw the doctor on Friday and she suggested an hour before taking methotrexate to take an anti nausea medication, and still he was up vomitting. Any thoughts or suggestions??

MTX made me feel pretty awful from the start, which I toughed out for a while, but not nausea. Has he had any blood tests recently? Given how serious this drug is I'd be very wary of just taking more ant-emetics.

Hi there, I was on Methotrexate for about 6 months, felt nauseated but never vomited and headaches which I rarely get are headaches. Didnt seem to help me so I went off it. Been on Pentasa and I have heard from others it can cause stomach problems, but not me. Everyone is different. Entocort was great for me too, mild to moderate both Entocort and Pentasa. Maybe he should get his doses adjusted??? Sorry not much help, but vomiting is not good in my opinion.

Methotrexate is a very potent drug, an antineoplastic (anticancer). It has been known to cause hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, as well as many other problems. Him getting sick is probably a result of your son's body trying to reject the drug, not uncommon. This is my opinion.

I just gave myself my second injection today. I felt a little tired the next day, but I also did 4 Humira injections that day also. So far no nausea or any other side effects.

I'm so sorry to hear your son is going through this! I also get very nauseated from MTX injections, but usually it's because I'm not taking enough folic acid. My GI prescribed 2 grams a day to alleviate the nausea, and it usually works. If he wakes up vomiting maybe the dr. can give him stronger antinausea meds. I drink peppermint tea and also I take peppermint altoids for the nausea, but unfortunately this won't stop vomiting. Rx Compazine suppositories stopped my vomiting/dry heaving.

Might be worth him trying taking it in the evening before bedtime so the effects have a chance to wear off during sleeping. It was one suggested to me by a specialist nurse in another area that I knew well. She gets her patients to do this and it seems to help.

Another thought is - when I was on methotrexate my team increased my folic acid from once weekly to every day except the day I took it. Might be an option also for him and worth looking into.

I did take an anti sickness but my crohns is such I do suffer nausea anyway. Did change from one to another which suited better and seemed to have better impact too.

The tiredness is something he will have to pace himself with and as you know when it occurs more he can plan to rest or do less strenuous things.

Hope my thoughts help and he is feeling a bit better soon ((hugs))
