Multiple illnesses...

My only daughter has Crohn's Disease, then developed fibromyalgia and now persistant and debilitating migraines. She was telling me this evening that someone else she knows has also developed all of the above symptoms/illnesses... in this same order. I was just curious just how many people out there have all of these symptoms/illnesses.

I worry about her. I am a huge believer in allowing our own bodies to heal with proper diet, herbals, homeopathic, yoga, meditation. I have an uncle in Kansas, where she lives that might could help her as he has an herbal business, but, she is not willing to do anything that the doctors do not suggest. I have taken feverfew for migraines for 20 years and it kicks booty on migraines, but, it might conflict with the meds for the other illnesses.

Is Crohn's usually accompanied by other illnesses?

Hi Mumsie - thanks for joining the forum!

I can say that extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) are fairly common with Crohn's. Autoimmune diseases tend to occur in multiples. Fibromyalgia is probably one of the more commonly experienced EIMs. Migraines are one of the potential symptoms of fibromyalgia, so it may be that she has Crohn's and FM, and not necessarily a 3rd illness.

I also believe that there are some very good homeopathic remedies out there, and there are some good pharmaceuticals out there as well. I would suggest looking for a doctor in the area who is at least open to alternative treatments so she can discuss those as well - and hopefully find a balance of therapies that work. You can peruse the Doctor Directory to see if any doctors in the area have already been reviewed.

Best of luck! Keep us informed on how things are going for you and her!

It's harder to see our children suffer than it is to suffer ourselves. I'm the one with Crohn's but I can only imagine how hard it would be to be the parent. I think it would be better to let her follow her own path to healing because if your suggestions didn't work it might cause resentment and hurt your relationship with her. It's hard when your doctor is telling you to do one thing and he/she is super sure and is the one in charge of your care and your mom is telling you to do another. I would just offer her hugs and support and maybe she'll ask you for homeopathic advice later on. But when you're sick you just want your mom to hug you and say that you'll be okay even if you're fifty years old. I'm 37 and I just called my mom crying yesterday. She didn't tell me what to do, but just agreed with all of my bitching and moaning and I felt one hundred percent better. :)

Welcome to the forum, Mumsie!

Crohn's is usually considered an autoimmune disease (although there is some debate), and it's somewhat common for autoimmune disease to occur together. Quite a few forum members do have multiple illnesses.

Personally, I have Crohn's disease and am showing some symptoms of fibromyalgia (which my mother has) but I haven't been diagnosed. I used to have migraines frequently as a child, but eventually found out they were a result of bad vision and haven't had problems with them since. Have her doctors been looking for possible causes of the migraines? Migraines can actually be a symptom of Crohn's and of fibromyalgia, so they may not be an issue of their own. Is she taking any medications? Migraines are also a side effect of many medicines.

 I hope she feels better soon.

Hi and welcome.

My Grace suffers from multiple diseases.
Yes they do seem to group together. IBD has soooooo many EIM's that are common.
My Grace suffers from sharp eye pain. Her pead. eye specialist said he's seen studies with the same eye pains and later on the the kids were dealing with migraines.

I hope your girl gets better soon.

Hi and welcome. I am sorry to hear that your daughter is suffering. There is a good sub forum for family members deal with a loved one that has CD here.

I have a crap load of other issues, majority of the autoimmune in nature. I have fibro and thyroid issues plus many others. It can be very frustrating when trying to treat multiple ailments. I would looked into her current meds to see if the migraines might be a side effect.

I also agree with the earlier post on looking for a dr that has knowledge of using alternative methods, so there is no complications.

Hoping you find some peace of min and your daughter finds remission soon.
