Hello I am new here and came across when trying to look for some answers here go see any help welcome.
My son is 12 and for a few years complained of pain in his tummy but we put it down to stress. About 8 months ago he had a big bleed when he used the loo and sins then we have noticed he gone up to 9 times a day with blood some times.3 times within the last month he said he felt like he needed to go but only passed blood and some mucus. He has lost 10kg in 6 months getting strep throat a lot ferls really sick aftet eating and cant keep up in pe at school. went off to the gp and they send him to the hospital he had blood and stool tests blood shows low iron but not to low and high information his stool fecal calprotectin came back at 1650. He has been referred for scopes and an mre.
Dose this sound design like crohn's?

Big hugs
Sounds like crohns
So glad your getting scopes
That is a good thing
Hopefully he can get dx quickly and find the right meds to keep him under control

Welcome to the forum! So sorry your son is not well. This could be symptoms of another condition, but yes, it does sound like it could be Crohn's. The MRE and scopes should provide you with a more solid answer. Then you can look at treatment, which may include a formula only diet for a period of time along with a maintenance med, steroids for a period of time along with a maintenance med, or perhaps a biologic like Remicade. I hope you get the answers you need soon, so you an get your son on the road to wellness.

Thank you for your comments. We should have an appointment with alderhey with in the next 2 weeks. It is horrible seeing the way he is now as he has never been a very out going child but he seems to of really gone in to himself of late.

Hi and welcome. Sounds like Crohns to me. My sons calprotectin was up around 1600 when he was diagnosed. Good luck for the scopes, not nice but definitely needed. Hope they get done soon so he can get treated

It does sounds like Crohn's. Hope scopes give you some answers quickly. The prep is really the worst part, the actual procedure is just a nap ;).

Hang in there!!

You are not alone. My son who is also 12, just saw a pedi GI specialist last week and is scheduled for an MRI Monday as well as colonoscopy and endoscopy the following week. All of this is so scary but it comforts me to know that there are other parents that are here to provide support. Thank you to you all. Let's get through this together.

Hi and a warm welcome to Mmmd01 and peacelovegi

Mmmd01,
It sounds like ibd but scope will tell for sure.
Trust me, even though you know it's probably ibd it still hits you hard when you hear it. Just remember we've all been there and all of us have different journeys.
So please don't read a story and think that's going to be your child.
Please keep us updated.

Thank you. There is a long history of crohns in my family with my 15 year old cousin passing away 3 years ago due to complications. We are holding out hope that it will be something simple but also being realistic that it will be ibd.

HI Mmmd01 sorry to hear about your son being ill and going through this diagnosis process. Sorry to hear about your poor young cousin also, must have been devasting for your family and is of course now adding to your worry.
I would agree with the others, it does sound like it could be Crohn's disease but you wont know for sure until the scopes and biopsies are taken. I wish you the best and hope you son starts to feel better.

We got a letter yesterday saying that he has got crohn's but they have to do the mre and scopes to find out where and the extent of it. I am not sure how the doctor can say he has just off bloods, stool test and what we have told her. We have a date for the mre on 30th and he has to start on iron tables asap.

Ugh, this must be frustrating for you. my son underwent his endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday and the preliminary findings lean towards ulcerative colitis. We are waiting for return of biopsies and will meet with doc again in a week or two to finalize diagnosis. Hang in there.

We have finally got an appointment to see the gastroenterology at the kids hospital for 7th so hoping his mri report is in his record then as he has that next Friday. Hopefully things start moving now
