Hi there:
I'm new here so will give you some background first.
I'm 52 years old, female, very active, eat healthy, but mildly overwieght (10-15 pounds) Have had fairly severe D and GERD for years. Have been on omeprazole for about 5 years and was on other stomach meds prior to that for many years. Had a couple of bouts last summer with severe cramping pain just below my sternum. Once it passed and once got so bad I was vomiting and ended up in emergency on IV gravol and percocet overnight. I had felt this same type of pain more frequently over the years particularly a couple of times when I had falls from my horse when jumping over fences. Seems the hard landing would cause the same pain but only briefly, would also sometimes feel it if I was doing something really aerobic.
So had the barium xray series,( upper and lower), colonoscopy, and endoscopy.
Diagnosed with Crohn's in terminal ileum in November 2010. Also have benign polyps in my stomach, a large hiatus hernia with some scarring. Also had trouble, starting in the fall, with extreme hemmoroid pain (thrombosed) and have had rectal cramping for the past view years that I was able to control with hot baths or heating pads. That problem is currently under control thank god.
Anyway, after the Crohn's diagnoses I went on a 12 week course of entocort. 9 mg for 6 weeks, 6 mg for 6 weeks. I have about 10 more days to go until that is done. At the same time I completely cut out lactose, caffeine, citrus, raw veggies, red meat (I do still drink alcohol:lol2: but less than I used to and don't drink beer)
Immediatley (within two days) the D stopped and has never returned. I don't think that the entocort could have worked this fast? I have often suspected that I was lactose intolerant but ignored it (I'm Dutch and cheese is a main food group :ylol Also, have had no hint of the pain and the hemmoroid issue is clearing up.
My main concern right now is that my GI wants me to go on imuran as a long term drug. I'm kind of opposed to this and want to wait and see what happens when I go off of the entocort. I honestly have no symptoms right now. When I said that I was reluctant he said that even when your asymptomatic the disease is progressing and that letting people go medication free during remission is sort of "old school" and he recommends imuran as a long term medication. He believes that it reduces the possibility of emergency surgery for bowel blockages? He also suggested that I start using a 1/4 teaspoon of tumeric daily (called in "poor man's imuran).
So, what do you guys think. I've been lurking for a couple of months and have learned a great deal from you all.
thanks
Jazz
