Okay, I'm not as clever as Dexky but I had to try to come up with a good title.

My out of the mouths story is that we are making our second visit to the oral surgeon today. Claire has a weird inflammation of the space behind her molar that is now about 1 1/2 weeks old. It has becomed so inflamed that the tissue has partially covering the tooth. So now, everytime she bites, it hurts, gets more inflamed, etc, etc, etc. Xrays revealed nothing. Her 12 year old molar is still way way way down in the jaw so doc didn't think that has anything to do with the sudden swelling.

The oral surgeon said that quite frankly, she's never seen this in a child this age and is suspicious that it is Crohn's related. So we have been applying topical steroid ointment to the whole area. (By the way, Claire says the ointment tastes like dog poop. To my knowledge, she would not really have any idea about the taste of dog poop....lol....anyway..... :)) Well it is redder and angrier and now she has a big nasty yellow abscessed looking sore on the side of the growth closest to her tongue. So, after a brief call yesterday, we are headed back to the oral surgeon today. She wants to do a biopsy before she starts, in her words, "just hacking away".

You know how we parents sometimes like to blame everything on Crohn's. I"m one of those parents however, this time I'm refusing to associate the two because she is doing so well in every other way......... I'm open to your thoughts on the subject though.

Hugs to all,

J.

That's a joke right Julie??? :rof:

Now on a more serious note.......ouch! To be honest I would hard pushed not to think it has correlation with crohns, I don't wish it to be though! May be I am leaning that way because of the oral surgeon's suspicions and observations.

Could it be some kind of Extraintestinal Granuloma?

Or may be nothing to do with crohns like a Pyogenic Granuloma?

I don't imagine it's some huge aphthous ulcer. Sorry I'm no help at all with this Julie.

Please let us know how Claire gets on and I hope she finds some relief soon!

Take care guys,

You all are sweet and I appreciate you responding. Oral surgeon poked and prodded today - no pus in there but Claire about stood up in the chair. She said she wanted to give it until Tuesday. If it looks the same or worse, she'll biopsy then. She said that way there will be a definite answer. She said, "If I biopsy it, we'll know what it is. If I biopsy it, then we'll find out if there is something down in there also" (even though xray didn't show anything).

You know, Dusty, you are probably right. I'm like an ostrich wanting to stick my head in the sand. But we have been on a lower dose of 6MP since October so I have to wonder if something's brewing........I hope not!

She's not complaining much but it really hurts when she tries to chew. That's when she says something.

Y'all have a good weekend.....promise to keep you posted.

J.

Thanks for the update Julie.

Good luck for Tuesday! and in the meantime I hope it doesn't cause Claire too much pain and discomfort, poor baby.

Hey, nothing wrong with your head in the sand! I think we need it sometimes just to save our sanity....... I too hope that it is nothing to do with Crohns or the reduction in meds. Fingers and toes crossed!

Look after yourselves,

Okay, typically with the us, nothing is typical. The mouth situation drastically improved over the weekend. So, we did not proceed with the biopsy yesterday. The oral surgeon stated she does feel like the swelling and overgrowth is likely Crohn's related. BUT, since it is resolving, she wants to leave it for now and just update her GI.

I got my wish for "out of the mouth" for now, right?

Hugs to all -

J.

Oh Julie that's fab that things have settled down. God I hope it stays that way and it's just one of those "what the hell was that" type of things!

Phew, :)

Thanks Dex & Dusty. I restrained the urge to tell you all it was all due to a big glass of carrot juice too. :rof::rof::rof:

(No disrespect intended for any juice lovers out there!)

Happy Friday!!

Julie- So glad it is resolving and hopefully gone now. A pain in the mouth is not any fun at all. I have one of my "hippy freak" (that is what my precious grown children call me) tricks that helps with mouth irritations. It has really helped me and my son. If it happens again or she gets a different mouth irritation and you want to try it- purely safe- yell out. I have used it on my grandson's monstrous teething. That kid has some big teeth. The braces fund has been started :D

Thanks Wendy! Hey, I'll take it now if you are up for sharing. Hopefully having it will be insurance that her mouth will be a-ok for a long while. :cool2:

Julie, Oil of Oregano (you want to get wild harvested - the brand I use is Oreganol). Rub a drop or two on the place. This is a natural antibiotic. This stuff is hot so she may need to rinse her mouth after a few minutes. The longer she can go without rinsing, the better. The heat will last about 4 minutes. My mouth "whatevers" heal within 24 hours using this stuff. Give Claire a hug.

Julie, if you try the oil, I'd like to hear about it....hmmm, sounds like another opportunity for a wiki article.:) EJ gets little tongue sores occasionally that seem to have responded to an extra B-vitamin and better dental/mouth hygiene. He will still rarely get them though and they are very annoying. Oil of oregano sounds nice and benign!!

Dexky- You can put a few drops in an ounce of water and rinse with it. Make sure to "hold" it in your mouth for a few minutes. This method is not as effective but it maybe easier on the tongue!
