Facts From the Book:

  • No one diet has been found that causes Crohn's Diseaese or any form of IBD, but there does seem to be some consensus among the diets of people who become suffers. Sufferers usually have higher sugar intake, lower fruit and vegetable intake (25% have less than 1 serving a day) and slightly higher caffeine intake (which increases the risk of disease).
  • A higher proportion of smokers can be found in people with Crohn's Disease compared to the average (especially in the United Kingdom). Smoking 1-2 packs a day increases the risk of Crohn's Disease bu 4 times and if developed will most likely require surgery
  • Women using a contraceptive pill (especially if also taking a high-estrogen formula) are more likely to have Crohn's Disease in the colon and not the ileum. One study found 75% of women 40 or younger with Crohn's tried the pill compared to 31% of other women that age.
  • Mycobacterium practuberculosis is found in 1/3rd of all Crohn's Disease Patients
  • Steroids suppres symptoms short-term but long-term reduce the chance of remission. They have long-term beneficial effects in Ulcerative Colitis patients.
  • Most Crohn's Disease sufferers will experience pain in the lower right-hand corner in the appendix area, where a constant pain is usually felt
  • A common symptom of the disease is short height, as Crohn's Disease often occurs in the young and malnourishment leads to a lack of growth
  • Crohn's Colitis is Crohn's Disease when only the colon is affected. It is diagnosed in the minority of IBD patients. It is almost distinguishable from Ulcerative Colitis as symptoms are similar
  • Common misdiagnosis's of IBD: gastroenteritis (food poisoning), acute appendicitis, peptic ulcer, bowel cancer, abdominal tuberculosis. X-rays/endoscopes can usually allow a correct diagnosis
  • Crohn's disease affects both ends (mouth and anus) of digestive tract in children more than adults. Symptoms can include swelling of lips, ulcers, painful cracks and fissures in the mouth. Steroids may help if used properly
  • Even 5mg a day of steroids can supress normal growth and bond density (found more so in boys than girls). Steroid dependency can last weeks to years.
  • 10% of newly diagnosed people are over the age of 50. Newly diagnosed early sufferers are usually women
  • 2 peak ages for Crohn's Disease diagnoses (20-29 and 70-79)
  • 42% of Crohn's Disease patients diagnosed when elderly require surgery, which is more than those who are younger and those with Ulcerative Colitis.
  • Sulfasazaline is most prescribed drug and has an anti-inflammatory property and an anit-bacterial property. Pentasa is the same without the sulfapyridine (anit-bacterial) it has next to no side effects
  • The immunosuppressant Azathioprine replaces steroid treatment in 50% of cases and reduces steroid amounts needed in 23% of users. A serious side effect occurs within 3 weeks for some and causes the bone marrow to stop making blood
  • Remicade/Infliximab blocks the activity of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in protein that may cause the inflammation found in Crohn's Disease
  • Vitamin K made by good bacteria in the large intestine might be low if colon is affected and since it is needed for blood to clot, hemorrhaging can occur. Resection of short intestine may also be needed
  • Stricturoplasty is best when many short skip lesions are found in the intestines
  • More than 1 million people in the United States have a stoma, and over 15,000 get one each year
  • 8/10 people achieve remission on an elemnetal diet or total parental nutrition
