Scipio Well-known member Joined Oct 15, 2015 Messages 1,869 Location San Diego Apr 26, 2017 #2 Both drugs are Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), and work in very similar ways. Perhaps the doc considers Protonix to be a bit stronger since it's a prescription drug, but Prevacid is sold over the counter.
