In May 2013, two days after I received a Tetanus shot i had my first flare up.
What is different in my case is that it would occur in my mouth and on my lips and only happens during my period. On the first day of my period my lips will get swollen which will be followed by blisters both in my mouth and on my lips. Sometimes it would be hard to open my mouth because my lips become so tight that it would result in me not being able to eat or drink properly.
Doctors could not pin point what was wrong with me(whether it was related to the Tetenus or not) so i went through a series of blood tests which showed I had inflammation in my body somewhere and eventually did a biopsy of my inner lip about 2 months after.
Thinking it was a hormone problem because i flared up like clock work every month during my period, i started birth control during a flare up which made it worse (it was near impossible to open my mouth, only a straw could fit for me to drink liquids). So after 3 days i stopped the birth control.
When I got back the biopsy results it showed it was related to IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) so the mouth specialist transferred me to a Gastroenterologist. After doing internal biopsies my large intestines showed signs of IBD so for 3 months i used Budesonide and was in remission for about 9 months.
Last month i flared again during my period and I was put back on the steroids and started immunosuppressants. It helped because the flareup was controlled. However this month i am still on the medication but my flare up is worse (mildly swollen lip with water blisters on my lips and on the roof of my mouth).
Has anyone experienced this before?
