Remicade and azathioprine are much more effective in combination than just Remicade alone. I believe the figure is 40% stay in remission after 1 year on Remicade alone vs 60% on both. Azathioprine not only helps to treat crohns but also protects you from becoming resistant to the Remicade. There is obviously an increased chance of side effects but I think this is outweighed by the benefits. Personally I am on methotrexate as I am allergic to azathioprine, however it works in a similar way.
