remission and treatment

Good morning. I was originally diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 2001. I had emergency resection surgery that same year. Since then, I have tried many forms of treatment, including pharmacy and coconut. Recently, in 2016 I had a severe flare up and my Specialist at Metro is heavy pushing towards Biologics. I pay for my own health insurance, which is expensive enough at over 250 dollars a month with deductibles and co pay. I have seen the commercials for Remicade and Humira and all the side effects. I have been praying and also tried accupuncture. I would love to have someone to chat with, A mentor. I have been on Budesonide since March of this year.

Hi and welcome to the forum. You will find many very supportive people here. You will also find many patients who have been helped enormously by the biologic drugs.

One comment about the commercials and the long list of scary-sounding side effects. Due to FDA rules, drug companies that advertise must list every single adverse effect and event that was ever observed during the course of the clinical trials no matter how rare, even if it had nothing to do with the drug itself.

This is not to say that there are no side effects, but the point is the your actual experience of side effects will likely be a lot milder and less scary than that frightening list in the ads.

^^^^ yeah that on side effects
Take a walk to the toy store
Tricycles/three wheeled bikes now have huge fatality warnings in the side of the box
Grab a box of Tylenol for infants
Warning of liver failure and death ( Steven Johnson syndrome - happens with amoxicillin as well btw)

You take risks everyday that are far greater
For kids I know the numbers
Under 14 risk of death
By car 1 in 250
Drowning ( even if they know how to swim) 1 in 1000
Average guy on the street without Ibd of T cell lymphoma 2 in 10000

Risk of T cell lymphoma when taking both biologics ( humira or remicade ) and ever taking an immunosuppressant ( Mtx 6-mp or Aza) 6 in 10000

Fwiw Ds has been on biologics since age 8
He is almost 13 now
No issues at all
Even with all the colds from elementary school kids

Good luck
