He listened to me and was patient and kind etc. I like him. He still thinks I just have IBS though. So.. i'm not sure whether to just accept that I do just have IBS or what. I've begun vomiting now too. He says I can't have Crohn's as i'm putting weight on. Not much weight but I was 56 two years ago, 57 last year and this year i'm 58. Ok, i'm not sure what measurement that is in, but I am a teenager, so I am growing anyway. But apparently because i'm not losing weight, then it shouldn't be Crohn's Disease.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, I'M HAVING AN ENDOSCOPY AND A COLONOSCOPY IN ONE DAY IN TWO MONTHS. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

We have all been waiting for this day for a long time! Hahaha.

mehh i hope you get it all sorted out soon :p oo and when you have yur colonscopy/endoscopy, theyre not that bad. .. i pretty much fell asleep for all of it even tho i wasn't properly put to sleep so don't worry about that :D

good luck ;)

I have Crohn's and I have put weight on since I was diagnosed. I think that comment is nonsense. Hopefully you will get some answers from the scopes.

They're putting me to sleep for the scopes because the doctor said my stomach is too sensitive for me to be awake during, so he will give me a light drug that will put me to sleep for an hour or so and then i'll wake up and it'll be done and I shouldn't be drowsy or anything unlike a heavy drug that would knock me out for ages and make me drowsy for ages, like they use for big ops. So that's great!

Just the prep.............

I think almost ALL the time you are put out for a colonoscopy and endoscopy? I have never heard of someone being fully awake with no drugs for those? If thats true then I can't even begin to think about the pain, discomfort, and uncomfortableness.

there was a post on here I read somewhere that the lady refused to be put under during the colonoscopy, that is the only time i have heard of it. Who would want to be awake? i dont want to be the one who is awake, and moves and then screams because me moving hurt.

Yikes! Yeah I meant, I think it's standard that you aren't awake for these tests meaning only by request you would be fully awake not the other way around!

In the UK they only make you drowsy as a routine, some people fall right asleep and others remain wide awake. The Drs like you to be a bit aware so you can move to assist the scope. You certainly don't scream as you move!

I had a flexible sig with nothing, a colonoscopy with gas and air, and an upper endoscopy with throat numbing spray. You don't get offered anything for the flexi-sig because it is quick and doesn't go far, and I declined light sedation for the colonoscopy because it was after the flexi-sig so I knew I didn't need it/ it wouldn't be that bad without. The upper endoscopy varies from Hospital to Hospital, I was offered numbing or light sedation when other places offer both (and that's what I wanted really). Since I knew the sedation didn't always work on everyone I went for the numbing spray because I didn't want to be awake and feel everything too.

I would repeat the first two no problem, but i'm afraid I would have to be knocked out and numbed to do the upper endo again, it was pretty bad although mercifully quick.

I can assure you 100% it is the thought of the procedure that is traumatic, and not actually having the procedures done while awake. As I said, there is no screaming! It is a walk in the park compared to the prep. A bit uncomfortable having lower scopes done, but what is a bit of discomfort really after spending 12 hours on the toilet passing hot acid water out of your butt?

The upper endo was really bad though, that I will freely admit.

Of course my colon isn't inflammed or ulcerated, I imagine if if were it would have hurt.

This issue has come up on the forum before, those in the US think "OMG awake for a scope" :ywow: and we in the UK tend to say "what's the big deal? lol" or "why on earth do you need to be unconsious for it" :ytongue:

I can see why those in the US are so horrified, because over there it is treated like a huge deal that you must be asleep for, that's not the case in the UK, which is why I am always amused at the reactions when I tell people lol. We in the UK know it is not that bad because we have been awake for it, but those in the US only have their imaginations to tell them what might happen.

im with star on this one.. it is definitely the thought that is traumatic for a colonoscopy.

ive had two colonoscopies (with just gas and air - entinox) and one sigmoidoscopy.. with nothing.
it didnt hurt like you are describing - although i'd imagine it might be painful for those with severe symptoms.

good luck tlc-x! you'll be fine, i know you've waited a loooong time to get some answers. so fingers crossed you can be on the road to feeling better soon xxxx

My cousin was awake completely for her scopes. She had her school prom that evening and they said either she has the scopes with drugs and misses her prom, or she sucks it up and does it without any drugs and does go to the prom. ... she picked no drugs and the prom. Bless her.

But i'm going to being asleep as the doctor doesn't want me awake at all for them.

I don't know what drug you will be given, but it is usually light sedation like you described, which tends to vary as to how well it works. Some fall right asleep and for others it has little effect. I know some people on the forum were expecting to be asleep and the drugs given just didn't work.

Of course only your Dr knows, and I imagine he is aware the standard drugs don't always work and will give you something else as he wants you asleep.

Thanks bozzylozzy. I mean, what for example would Greys Anatomy find more interesting and entertaining to show, me lying there with an occasional puff of gas chatting to the Nurse about my volunteer work, or someone waking mid-procedure, screaming and thrashing around, causing chaos for staff!

Haha.. yeah.. i remember taking the occasional puff of the gas and talking to the nurse about the most random stuff. i think i giggled a few times too.. due to the gas.

though.. during my sigmoidoscopy they had to laser the bleeding parts of my bowel and that REALLY hurt :(
