Sick and tired..

sick and tired..

Hi can anyone explain why I am getting another big flare up within a flareup from Colitis. I was on 8 prednisones for 2 wks then have been tapering off 1 each wk. I was feeling pretty good then as i got down to 3 it just started to act up . I am in more pain now then ever.I am back up to 4 preds again but it's just not helping. Once again I am waiting on my specialist to call me back to see what my next option is. I am sooo sick of being sick.

Heya, I was diagnosed with Crohn's in October 2010 (took 1.5 years to get that diagnoses), and I was given prednisone as well with the exact same dosage declining by 1 each week. The symptoms returned especially when I got down to 2 or 3 a day. I wouldn't recommend the prednisone for any lenghty period as shortly after I was diagnosed with Osteoperosis. Have you heard of Ayurveda? What about FODMAP diet? I had some oil enemas done in India that helped me out a lot. Hope something I said gives you hope. Don't lose hope...

Heya, maybe don't mentioned Ayurveda and oil enemas as that is beyond the realm of traditional medicine. FODMAP though was recommended by my specialist and it is the only thing that helped me with my symptoms. Be careful though, it is an elimination diet (but empirically successful - 75% of crohn's patients reported feeling much better). Basically eliminate gassy foods like beans but also onions, garlic, gluten, dairy, nuts, oatmeal, raw salads, sugar and FRUITS. Fruits have sugar in them. When I eliminated fruits I felt so much better. Anyway, talk to your specialist about it. FODMAP.

Sorry one last thing, what you CAN eat:

- cooked vegetables
- rice
- light lentils
- chicken
- fish

Make sure all the food is very flavorful.

Ok no prob. I do avoid dairy, red meats, fiber foods when in a flareup, nuts and salads but sweets are my down fall. I do eat the rice, chicken fish and canned fruit. Thanks again.

Hi cecilialynn and welcome! Unfortunately, many have been in the same boat as you when they begin to taper off Pred. It is important to take your time with the taper. How many mgs did you reduce each week? Most doctors tend to have patients drop 10mg a week, but that can be too much of a reduction too fast for some. You may need to reduce weekly by 5mgs. Also, how long were you on the highest dose? If you started tapering too soon, that could have been the cause for your current flare.

hi and thanks, I was on them since May 3, started with 8 for 2 wks then tappered off 1 med (5mg) every week. So now i am back up to 8 for the next 2 wks then slowly drop 1 med every second week till i am completely off them. I appreciate all info that all of you's have been giving me.
