i woke up this morning and my calves are sooo achy, feel like i spent the night climbing up mountains....Has anyone had this before? I know i didn't sleep well, was up almost hourly to use the can, but can't think of any reason for my calves to be so sore.

My bones ache when I don't get enough sleep. If it's muscular maybe a virus? I hope not though.

Sometimes if you are having a lot of diarrhea, it can cause your electrolytes to be imbalaced....Mainly Potassium, Sodium and Calcium....You can try drinking something like Gatorade to see if it helps.

Potassium levels can do that, and meds too. Sorry to ask but what medications are you on? Cipro is famous for that!

I'm taking Buscopan, nexium, antidepressant, and some other IBS drug i can't remember the name of....the electrolyte imbalance does make sense though, didn't think of that, thanks!

Yeah, potassium's a big culprit for Crohn's patients. I now take Centrum chewables. They're not bad and give me some nutrients I might not normally get. Though I pretty much just pee out the B12 because I don't absorb it anymore in my bowels.

Cramps in Calves

I started getting cramps in just one leg in October. Went to the doctor and we figured out it may have been related to me discontinuing my multivitamins daily. Started taking them again and cramps went away. Discontinued once again a couple of weeks later and the cramps started again. Started the vitamins again and they went away. Probably related to potassium as the others have said.

I get the jimmy legs from the Prednisone. My legs feel like they are going to run away from my body, can't get them to relax. Makes it really hard to fall alseep.

I tend to get shin splints a lot though, but I think it is just bad bones and joints from years of Crohn's drugs.

I used to get those same sensations. Also, my calf muscles would cramp and lock for a good bit, leaving me howling and rolling around the bed and floor. I thought it might have something to do with potassium levels. I played soccer for many years and have had to deal with cramps and such. But my hematologist told me that the issue was likely due to iron deficiency anemia. I started having IV iron and those crazy night cramps are gone, for the most part.

Another thing that can help with cramps is magnesium. Since taking it i stopped getting really bad foot cramps. However it takes a while to kick in!

are you still having sore calves? and can u tell if theyre swollen at all?
for a couple months last year i had arthritis during a crohns flare and my legs, including calves, were very sore and achey. is your crohns bad right now?

I get that problem too. Especially in the morning. Not sure what it is. I already take all the various supplements.

They're still sore, but not as bad as they were that morning.
I'm not well, but i don't actually have a diagnosis so I don't know what's related to what...It's frustrating. Another thing to add to my list for my doc's. LOL

A quick remedy my mom and her friends have tried is Tonic water (yes it is a bitter taste) and a clear fruit juice. The quinine in the tonic water helps cramps and charlie horses. It may help you, and costs it low and nature...cant hurt.
