specific carbohydrate diet
Hi I'm new to this ..... came across this website accidentally.
A few years ago I was suffering with undiagnosed digestive problems and started searching for answers. It was only as I was searching the net for help for my dad who has Crohns disease that I discovered "The Specific Carbohydrate Diet" At this stage I had also developed weird pains over my body that moved from one place to the next as well as continually fighting off virus type symptoms and just generally feeling like "death warmed up".
I was pretty desperate as docs and specialists didn't have any answers so thought I'd try the diet, to at least try to deal with the digestive issues. The diet is very strict..no grains whatsoever (nothing made with flour, rice etc) no starchy vegetables such as potatoes. No processed foods. So my diet initially consisted of fruit, vegetables (including vegetable juices) , meat, fish, eggs, home made yoghurt (fermented 24 hours to get rid of the lactose) hard cheeses and also allowed is legumes soaked overnight before cooking. There is a lot that is allowed but the most difficult to adjust to is not having convenience, ready made food but it was worth it....boy was it worth it!!!!!
Within days my digestive issues had resolved, the strange pains had gone, reflux disappeared, sinus headaches gone, palpitations gone and I started feeling alive again. Thanks to God for leading me to this diet.....what a relief! The only things that I noticed that hadn't resolved were the ringing in my ears, although that had diminished and my dry eye condition was still there.
I discovered that after a while of being on the diet I could "cheat" occasionally without suffering but if I went back to eating "normal" food the symptoms, especially the pain, would return.
The details of the diet can be found on the web...just type in specific carbohydrate diet ...there is plenty of info including about the book "Breaking the vicious cycle Intestinal health through diet" by Elaine Gottschall
I became quite lax with the diet after feeling well for a long time and am suffering for it so am now having to discipline myself to stick to it again.
Hope my story will help someone out there. May God bless you and lead you all on your journey to wholeness. Ginny
