Hey guys.

I am new here and this is my first post.

I have Crohn's disease and was diagnosed 19 yrs ago, when I was 10 yrs old.
I have had at least 10 surgeries, including a total colectomy, j-pouch (which failed), j-pouch take down, and an ileostomy.

I've been super sick this past wk. I went to the doctors today, and found out I have an ear infection as well as strep throat. I told her I couldn't take ibuprofen, so she gave me a 5 day supply of Celebrex to take. She told me to take 2 pills today (400mgs) and 1 pill (200mgs) a day for 4 days. I know you shouldn't take Celebrex long term (ie, arthritis treatment, etc), but what about for just a few days? My throat and ear is killing me and tylenol just aint cutting it... :(

Personally, I wouldn't want to risk it, especially as I had my first ever flare after some sort of throat/ear infection, which I took ibuprofen for 6 days or so. I would rather take a low dose codeine/paracetamol pill- they are available over the counter here. I would be phoning the doctor and asking for something else!

By the way, have you tried inhaling steam? It helps soothe your throat and clear your ears.

I'm with Rebecca--don't risk it. Call the doc and see if they will give you Tylenol with codeine or something like that. Earaches are horrible without something for pain.

I'm with everyone..I had one of my worst flares on Celebrex..the only time I had to go on tpn with a central line that got infected and was treated for a whopping three weeks. Don't risk it!i know codeine isn't OTC I the states but maybe you can get a fee days of it or hydrocodone for your ear ache..doctors are incredibly paranoid in the states about narcotics now..needlessly so to that degree for Pete's sake!
Steam and heat is a great idea though!u could put menthol or eucalyptus in the bowl with hot water and let the steam go in that area..

Thanks guys for the advice. I decided against taking it. I dont want to be sicker than I already am. Im still feeling terrible. The antibiotics aren't helping. So if Im still feeling like this tomorrow, Im calling the doc to ask for something to help with the pain. I will try the steam too. Ive been living on popsicles and tea with honey. Lol

Why would they prescribe an NSAID like Celebrex if you said you can't take ibuprofen? Definitely get something with acetaminophen instead! NSAIDs are big no-nos. Feel better soon!

Glad to hear you made the decision yo did..it sucks for now but in the log run you'll probably be grateful!:)

Even if they wont treat with a narcotic, there is always antipyridine/benzocaine which will help minimally as ear drops or tramadol as tablet. -hugs-
