Tapering off Entocort

Location
Ontario
I saw my GI today, I just started Remicade so he said I could taper off Entocort which I have been on for almost 6 weeks. He told me to cut to 6mg for a month and then 3mg for a month, is this a normal taper? I thought it would be faster :-(

On the plus side, because we had a snowstorm today, half the patients didn't show for IBD clinic and I didn't have to wait :)

I've actually never tapered off of Entocort. Prednisone yes but not Entocort. I was on 9mg for 3 months and came off with no taper. I've also taken it longer than that with no taper. Perhaps your GI wants to give Remicade time to start working rather than taking you off Entocort entirely because it can take a few months for Remicade to start working for some people.

Interesting. Entocort hasn't been doing much for me, so I was dissapointed that he told me to drag out the taper for so long. Plus, I had an MRI last week that he said showed nothing so my upper left wuadrant pain is still a complete mystery. Beginning to think its in my head. The Remicade is for my lovely fistulas.

I was told to taper as well when I came off Entocort, although mine was a bit shorter. Two weeks at 6mg, then two weeks at 3mg.

I haven't been told yet if I'll be tapered off of budesonide. I'm at the end of my first month and starting my second. My GI said I should try it for three months.

Yep Stelarjess, That is the regime that I have been advised to employ over previous and present [now 3mgs daily] treatment courses of Entocort. I am always cautious about inducing a Addisonal crisis by tapering too rapidly. better to be safe than sorry!

That seems more reasonable than 3mg per month. I don't see any need for me to stay on Entocort, so not sure why my taper is so long.

AlliRuns, my Friend,
I should have mentioned that some time ago, I was brought down very rapidly from a dose of 9mgs of Entocort daily after experiencing some very unpleasant neurological/cardiac S/E's . Despite this , I was able to cease taking the drug well under the time frame that I previously outlined, without incident.

Having been prescribed steroids by at least three medicos, there really doesn't to be any fast and hard rules concerning tapering. Each doctor seems to have a slightly different opinion. Coincidentally . this is my final day of Entocort and I will not take it again. Put simply , it has little beneficial effect in my case and I really am concerned about deleterious long term outcomes.
Cheers
Merv
